MOL Autopilot Route Control Function Saves 1.5% Energy
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Junichiro Ikeda) today announced that the company, along with Tokyo Keiki Inc. (President & CEO: Kenichi Waki; Headquarters: Ota-ku, Tokyo), conducted a performance demonstration test of its autopilot route control function, called “Advanced Control for Ecology (ACE)”, onboard a vessel in service. The results show an energy savings of about 1.5%. The ACE estimates disturbance effects such as wind and tide by setting the vessel’s course direction, and optimally controls the helm to minimize route deviation and reduce the number of course changes required during a voyage, achieving significant reductions in fuel consumption compared to a similar vessel with a conventional control system.
MOL Launches Trial Use of Big Data to Promote Growth of Maritime Cluster
Japan-based Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is to trial a new system of onboard data gathering and transmission from its operated vessels to the ClassNK-owned Ship Data Center, a new organisation which offers consolidated management of vessel operational data. MOL has worked steadily to create an environment that allows the collection of big data from onboard its operated vessels, and sharing the information between ship and shore in real time using marine broadband service. Based on the analysis of onboard big data, MOL also aims to build a comprehensive vessel operation support network, which will improve operating safety, reduce vessels' environmental impact, make vessel operation more economical, enhance ship management, and promote high-quality training and education for seafarers.

Lines, Ltd. announced that it has started a demonstration test of a next-generation condition-based engine monitoring system called “CMAXS e-GICSX” (electronic Global Internet Customer Support neXt) aboard the recently delivered methanol carrier MAYARO. MOL is conducting the test in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK; Chairman and President: Noboru Ueda; Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES; President: Takao Tanaka; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo), and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. (Managing Director: Shinichi Fukuda; Headquarters: Tamano-shi, Okayama).
