Tech File: Propelling Hybrid Electric Solutions
Growing interest in hybrid-electric power systems is expanding the search for new propulsion and energy-storage systems in the workboat sector, where compliance with emerging environmental regulations and a relentless pursuit of operational efficiency are driving change. To meet demands for cleaner more efficient power, owners are examining the potential for less conventional methods of energy generation and storage – such as fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, super-capacitors, flywheels, wind and solar – to propel their vessels.
Wärtsilä Propulsion for Seabourn Cruise Vessels
Two new cruise vessels being built for USA based Seabourn Cruise Line will feature a broad assortment of Wärtsilä propulsion, electrical and automation solutions. The ships are to be built at the Fincantieri yard in Italy. The 'Seabourn Encore' is already under construction and the 'Seabourn Ovation' is scheduled to join the Seabourn fleet in 2018. The contracts with Wärtsilä for the vessels' navigation and automation systems were signed in December 2015. The engine orders were signed in late 2014 and in the third quarter of 2015. The comprehensive range of Wärtsilä navigation, automation and sensor systems to be installed on these vessels includes the Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum and Wärtsilä Valmatic Platinum systems.
SAM Electronics Equips Viking Grace
SAM Electronics, an L-3 company, has equipped Viking Line’s new 57,000-gt passenger ferry, Viking Grace, with a NACOS Platinum integrated navigation control system together with a Valmatic Platinum integrated automation system from its associate company, L-3 Valmarine. Built by STX Finland at its Turku yard and designed for cruising the shallow waters of the Finnish and Swedish archipelago, Viking Grace is the world’s largest LNG-fuelled ferry and the most environmentally friendly and energy-efficient vessel of its type. It is due to begin service this January and will comply with stringent 2015 Baltic regulations on gas emissions.
First of GPA-654 Supply Vessel Delivered by Bollinger
The first of 10 new Rigdon GPA-654 platform supply vessels, appropriately named First and Ten, has been delivered from Bollinger Shipyards in Louisiana. Another 22 of the vessels of the same 190-foot design are on order by Bourbon Offshore from a Chinese yard. As with earlier Guido Perla-designed supply vessels, the diesel-electric propulsion power in these vessels is being supplied by Cummins Mid-South LLC of Kenner Louisiana. For these vessels the diesel electric package consist of two Cummins KTA-50DM1-powered1235 KW and one Cummins KTA-19DM1-powered 425 KW main propulsion generators and one 6BTA5.9G-85 KW SOLAS emergency standby generator.
