Hornbeck Offshore Buys Hi-Spec OSV Trio from MARAD

U.S. offshore vessel owner Hornbeck Offshore Services said Monday it had has acquired three high-spec new generation offshore supply vessels ("OSVs") from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration ("MARAD") for an undisclosed amount of cash. All three of the vessels that were acquired at auction are U.S.-flagged, Jones Act-qualified, 280 class DP-2 OSVs with capacities of circa 4,600 DWT. Bourbon Commits 100+ Vessels to Fleet Xpress

Saudi Arabia’s Rawabi Vallianz Offshore Services  (RVOS) has contracted Netherlands-based Praxis Automation Technology to deliver dynamic positioning systems for its fleet of offshore support vessels (OSVs) operating out of the country. Green Award Certification for OSVs

Green Award certification program has been extended with a new ship type – Offshore Supply vessels (OSVs). The first ship of this type the ‘’Lingestroom’’ has been successfully certified.The Lingestroom, one of the ships of Van Wijngaarden Marine Services B.V. received a Green Award certificate on 26 February, 2019. The Lingestroom has become the first Offshore Supply ship after Green Award, a certification and incentive program for shipping, had introduced certification for this type of vessels.The certificate was presented by Jan Fransen, executive director of Green Award to congratulate Van Wijngaarden Marine Services B.V. with pioneering Green Award certification for Offshore Supply ships.The certification programme for Offshore Supply ships was launched in the first quarter of 2019.

NOSAC to USCG: Allow Domestic OSVs in Disaster Recovery

Last week, the National Offshore Safety Advisory Committee (NOSAC) overwhelmingly approved recommendations that the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) remove the hinderances that prevented U.S. energy-industry vessels, from assisting Puerto Rico with recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria.The offshore energy industry is serviced by highly specialized vessels. Offshore supply vessels (OSVs) have large open decks to carry cargo to offshore rigs. OSVs typically also have massive internal tanks to carry and pump water, drilling mud, or fuel to offshore facilities.

Norway's DOF: OSV Market Improving

The cost of renting offshore supply vessels (OSVs), servicing oil and gas firms, will continue to rise as many ships that were mothballed up during the downturn will not return to the market, the chief executive of Norway's DOF said on Wednesday. Inmarsat Adapts Fleet Xpress for OSVs

Wärtsilä Launches WTT-40 Transverse Thruster

Wärtsilä is launching its new Wärtsilä WTT-40 transverse thruster. The first WTT-40's have been ordered and are scheduled for delivery during 2016. This first variant is part of Wärtsilä's new transverse thruster series and features a 4000 kW power level and a 3400 mm diameter controllable pitch propeller, neither of which have been available in Wärtsilä's current product range. While Wärtsilä has designed and built large, up to 5500 kW, transverse thrusters as customised versions, the WTT-40 and others in the WTT range address customer needs for  high power transverse thrusters for bow and stern applications. Development work on the Wärtsilä WTT-40 began in 2015 in response to market demand.

Danelec Bags Multiple VDR Orders in Middle East

Danelec Marine, along with distribution partner Elcome International, is to supply Danelec DM100 Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) for 14 ships in the Middle East.   The new VDR orders include seven new offshore support vessels (OSVs) and five tanker retrofits for an oil and ga companies based in Abu Dhabi. In addition, Elcome has recently completed retrofit of Danelec DM100 VDRs on two tankers of a major Danish shipping company.   Introduced in 2014, Danelec Marine’s DM100 VDR complies with all the latest IMO and IEC performance standards, and incorporates Danelec’s exclusive SoftWare Advanced Protection (SWAP) technology for ease of shipboard service as well as built-in cyber protection technology.

Mothballed Vessels SE Asia Reflect Oil Slump Pain

Around 1,300 offshore support vessels lying idle worldwide. Not everyone in shipping is bemoaning the industry's worst crisis in living memory: a cluster of companies that help preserve equipment and provide security for vessels parked around southeast Asia are busier than they have been for years. A popular lay-up anchorage near Indonesia's Batam island, a short hop from Singapore, is growing crowded, and firms such as Ocean Shipcare and Brubay Shipcare are running out of space at another at Brunei Bay, near Labuan, off northern Borneo. "Where do we go next? It's a good question, because we are trying to explore some other areas also," said Kanen Senasendram, base manager at Ocean Shipcare, which operates in Brunei Bay. He says he may need to hire more staff.

I recently read a story in The New Yorker – but that sounds more intellectual than what really happened, let me start over. I recently clicked a link on Facebook, which sought to explain why the term “Fake News” has become so popular. The article claimed that facts no longer matter to the average voter. As evidence (yes, the article explaining why facts don’t matter included evidence), it detailed a study whereby the subjects had been given false information, then were asked to make a choice between two options.
