Refurbished Ferry Delivered to CalMac

A newly refurbished ferry has been delivered to provide additional capacity for operator CalMac Ferries on the west coast of Scotland.Purchased out of Norway in 2021 and renamed Loch Frisa, the vessel departed Dales Marine Services in Leith on May 29 for repositioning to Oban where it is undertaking familiarization and entry-in-to service activities.Starting in mid-June, the double-ended RoPax ferry will be phased into the Oban-Craignure timetable, in tandem with Coruisk. Veth Propulsion Now Available Throughout North America

Veth Propulsion’s portfolio of products, including azimuth rudder propellers, thrusters and marine electronics, will now be fully available across North America, parent company Twin Disc announced. The equipment will be offered through Twin Disc’s Authorized Sales and Service Providers.“Increasing the availability of Veth Propulsion’s products in North America strategically expands our market opportunity within the marine industry,” said Tim Batten, vice president, sales, Twin Disc, provider of power transmission technology for marine and land-based applications.

How have major events such as the U.S./China trade war, oil price fall and COVID-19 impacted Twin Disc’s commercial marine business to date, and what adjustments have you made in response?These are the three things that I’ve been highlighting in employee communications and with investors over the last few months. For us, COVID was just the third punch after the other two. China is typically our second largest market after the U.S., and we lost lots of orders to our competitors as the trade war started to affect us. It’s rebounding a little, but it definitely impacted our sales into China.

Twin Disc, Inc. Announces Closing of Veth Propulsion Acquisition

Twin Disc, Inc. a provider of power transmission technology and equipment for marine- and land-based applications, announced today that it has completed the €52.1 million (approximately $60.8 million), acquisition of Veth Propulsion Holding, B.V. and its wholly-owned subsidiaries (“Veth Propulsion”), a global supplier of main and auxiliary marine propulsion products. The closing price included net cash and working capital adjustments. The acquisition of Veth Propulsion establishes Twin Disc as a leading power control business for the global marine industry and expands Twin Disc’s presence in the market by adding complementary products and powerful new technologies. In addition, Veth Propulsion enhances Twin Disc’s engineering talent and product development capabilities.

Twin Disc Acquires Veth Propulsion

U.S. based power transmission technology and equipment manufacturer Twin Disc, Inc. announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Netherlands based marine propulsion products supplier Veth Propulsion Holding, B.V. and its wholly-owned subsidiaries.Twin Disc said the purchase price is approximately $58.6 million plus net cash, with potential adjustments based on Veth Propulsion’s working capital as of the closing date, and will be financed through a combination of cash and new debt facilities.

Southern Illinois Transfer Orders Harbor Tug

Barbour JB Shipyard of St. Louis has laid the keel for a new harbor tug that will be powered by Veth Z-drives. The purchase agreement was signed at the Inland Marine Expo, St. Louis, by Kurt Johnson, Southern Illinois Transfer president and owner of the vessel; Guido Davids, Veth Propulsion area sales manager; and Tim Batten, Twin Disc director of global marine sales. Twin Disc is the distributor for Veth Propulsion in the US, exclusive of the Gulf Coast region. The tug has a planned length of 68' and beam of 28'. It will be powered by twin 750 hp Cummins diesels and Veth VZ-700 Z-drives.

Great Ships of 2014: The Hybrid-Powered Semper Fi

The MV Semper Fi  from the Netherlands is an innovative European inland waterway vessel measures 361 x 37.7 x 12.1 ft. (110 x 11.5 x 3.7 m). In cooperation with MARIN, the Netherlands Maritime Research Institute in Wageningen, the Dutch shipping company Carpe Diem Shipping developed the novel concept of Semper Fi , which reportedly is the first inland vessel that can simultaneously be propelled by a diesel engine and an electric motor – a unique combination, and one that has confirmed a 10%  savings in energy consumption. The hybrid drive is not the only sensation of the SEMPER FI project.

Veth Propulsion Wins Z-drive Brazil Order

Holland- based Veth Propulsion has signed a contract for the delivery of 28 counter-rotating of Z-drives, type VZ-700-CR (700 kW/1800 rpm). The Z-drives are intended for seven aluminum catamarans, designed by CoCo Yachts Holland BV and for the State of Rio de Janeiro. The seven ferries of 78 meters have a capacity of 2000 passengers and will sail between Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, with the World Cup 2014 and Olympic Games 2016 transportation needs in mind. "There are 100,000 people using that route each day," says Henk van Herwijnen, General Manager at CoCo Yachts.
