Port of Virginia Posts Record July Volumes

July is Second Busiest Month in Port of Virginia’s History.The Port of Virginia in July processed 265,559 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in July, making it the second busiest month in the port’s history.The strong cargo performance was driven by an increase of more than 4 percent in loaded import containers, and a jump of nearly 18 percent in export empty containers, which are being repositioned across the globe to handle peak season cargo.“We are continuing to set volume records.

Port of Va. Signs Long Lease for International Gateway

Governor Terry R. McAuliffe on Wednesday announced that The Port of Virginia has signed a new, long-term lease for Virginia International Gateway (VIG) that clears the way for the port to begin work on doubling capacity at the deep-water container terminal. “This is an historic event for The Port of Virginia,” Gov. McAuliffe said. The new lease, which was negotiated during a two-year period, will give the port oversight of and operating rights at the terminal until 2065. Further, the lease allows the port to begin work on a $320 million project to build the terminal’s second phase; construction will begin this year. The lease is between the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) and Virginia International Gateway Inc.…

Newport News Shipbuilding celebrates the keel-laying of aircraft carrier John F. Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), celebrated the keel laying of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second ship of the Gerald R. Ford class. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the ship's namesake, the 35th President of the United States, is the ship's sponsor. She declared the keel "truly and fairly laid" via video to signify the ceremonial start of construction. "The aircraft carrier came of age in a time of conflict," Caroline said.

Port Infrastructure Projects Underway in Virginia

U.S. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today joined Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, and other Federal, state and local officials to break ground on two major infrastructure projects at the Port of Virginia. Northrop Grumman Newport News to Lay Keel

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector is teamed with Electric Boat to build the first four ships of the Virginia-class. Texas is the second ship of the class and the first one that will undergo final assembly and delivery at Newport News in 2005. Laura Bush Authenticates Keel

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector hosted a keel laying ceremony for the second Virginia-class submarine, Texas (SSN 775). Laura Bush is the Ship's Sponsor and served as the keel authenticator for the ceremony. Mrs. Bush authenticated the keel by chalking her initials onto a metal plate.
