VOC Port Sets New Record
South India's VO Chidambaranar Port created a new record by handling 1,80,597 MT of cargo in a single day on July 27 this year, surpassing the previous single day record of 1,77,639 MT on November 16, 2017.The fourth-largest container terminal in India said in a statement that major cargoes of the day include coal (79,230 MT), containerized cargo (52,200 MT / 2,900 TEUs) and general cargo (49,167 MT).The state-controlled port has also handles highest parcel size of 85,224 MT. Last Thursday, the port had berthed a vessel with the highest parcel size of 85,224 MT.The Cyprus-flagged vessel âMV Kmax Emperorâ carrying limestone arrived from the Port of Mina Saqr, United Arab Emirates.
Tuticorin Port Signs MoU with CWC
India's V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin and Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for facilitating Direct Port Entry (DPE) of e-sealed factory stuffed export container tothe port under âEase of Doing Businessâ.With this MoU, Central Warehousing Corporation would make use of the 18,357 sqm area earmarked in the Truck Parking Terminal located opposite to Fisheries College, Tuticorin for operating and managing the Direct Port Entry (DPE) facility for 30 years on Annual Lease Rental basis.DPE facility would enable direct movement of containers from factories without intermediate handlingâŚ
V.O. Chidambaranar Port Sets New Record
India government-owned V O Chidambaranar Port Trust (VOCPT) in Chennai created a new record for single day handling of cargo yesterday, when it handled 36,526 Metric Tonnes of thermal coal at the berth NCB-I from the vessel MV. Asian Champion. The previous single day record was 35,656 Metric Tonnes of thermal coal at the same berth from the vessel MV. Tentenc on 30.10.2016. Shri I. Jeyakumar, Chairman of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust said that this Port is continuously striving to achieve improvement in performance and productivity in order to attract more volume of traffic. VOCPT is in the process of channel-deepening and breakwater construction project to help larger ships to call at the port located in Tamil Naduâs Thoothukudi district.
Indian Shipping Bucks Trends with Positive Growth
The Indian shipping industry is registering a positive growth amid a downward trend globally, Union Minister of State for Shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan said. âWhile the shipping sector is seeing a downward trend worldwide, India is registering a positive growth, and the credit for this should go to Prime Minister Narendra Modi,â he said. The Sagarmala programme launched by the Prime minister last year aims to increase the capacity of Major and Non-Major Ports to 3000 MTPA from the present 1054 MTPA, he said. Major ports have been consistently increasing their capacity and making profits over the last few years. He was speaking at a function organised by V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust.
Clean Fortnight Activities in Chidambaranar Port
As per the directives of Government of India, the âSwachhta Pakhwadaâ (fortnight-long cleanliness) activities are being executed on priority basis by V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust. As per the scheduled Swachh Pakhwada Action Plan, today, on 20.03.2017, color washing and paintings of residential buildings and structures of Harbour Estate were carried out as per the colour code to ensure healthy environment. Signage boards and posters have also been placed in areas of waste generation and handling. Action has also been taken to clean and repair the drainage systems available in the Port operational areas and Residential areas. In the wharf area cleaning works have been done in the berth VOC Wharf, Transit sheds and Warehouse â I.

Indian Ports to Go Green
The Indian Ministry of Shipping, as a part of its âGreen Port Initiativeâ has been emphasizing on use of renewable sources of energy to power Major Ports across the nation. The Ministry aims to set up 91.50 MW of solar energy capacity at the twelve Major Ports and 45 MW of wind energy capacity by the two Major Ports of Kandla and V. O. Chidambaranar. Major Ports have started the process of setting-up renewable energy projects by investing Rs.704.52 crores ($ 104 million) in these projects. When completed, these renewable energy projects will help in the reduction of carbon dioxide emission by 136,500 MT annually. These projects will also help to reduce cost of power purchased by utilization of renewable energy for power generationâŚ
Colachel to Become Major Port
The government of India would soon build a major port at Colachel in the southernmost tip of Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of $3.2 billion (Rs 21,000 crore), envisaged to emerge as a southern gateway of transshipment in the country, reports PTI. He said that the Government of Tamil Nadu has given its consent to the Centre to facilitate developing the port. The port would be developed in three phases and it would take three years for completing the construction," he said.The minister, however, did not elaborate the roadmap as to whether the port would be built on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model and did not talk about the monetary contribution by the Union government in establishing it.
VOC Port Trust All-time Record Cargo Handling
V.O. Chidambaranar Port handled an all-time record cargo traffic of 32.41 million tonnes during 2014-15, registering an increase of 13.17 per cent over the previous yearâs volume of 28.64 million tonnes. According to Chairman of VOC Port Trust S. Anantha Chandra Bose, this was 1.28 per cent higher than the target of 32 million tonnes set by the Ministry of Shipping. The port crossed the target of 32.00 mt by handling 32.03 mt on March 28. In containers, the port handled a record throughput of 5,59,727 TEUs and there is an increase of 10.24 percentage when compared with the previous yearâs container traffic at 5,07,735 TEUs. Imports accounted for 23.99 million tonnes, registering an increase of 14.35 per cent over the previous yearâs import traffic of 20.98 million tonnes.
Record Cargo Traffic at VOC Port
V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, has crossed the previous yearâs traffic of 28.642 million tonnes on Feb 27, 32 days ahead of the current financial year closing by handling 28.849 million tones (upto Feb 27). According to a statement from the VOC Port Trust, the Port crossed the previous yearâs (2013-14) Container traffic volume of 5,07,735 TEUs on March 3, by handling 5,08,678 TEUs of Container Traffic during the current year (as on March 3). VOC Port has handled record cargo traffic of 3.235 mln Tonnes during February, surpassing the previous achievement of 2.853 mln tonnes handled during March 2014, which is the highest ever tonnage handled at the port in a single month so far.
VOC Port Begins Cargo Shipping to Dubai
The first regular container service to Dubai from V.O. Chidambaranar Port in India commenced on Tuesday. Chairman of the VOC Port Trust S. Anantha Chandra Bose inaugurated the service being operated by Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal Private Limited on the 8{+t} {+h} berth of the port. VOC Port will in a month run four container services, which would sail from berth 8 at the port run by Dakshin Barath Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd (DBGT), to Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. Indian Port Extends Container Handling Capability
A second container terminal at V.O. Chidambaranar Port at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India to be ready by year-end. The second container terminal will have a handling capacity of six hundred thousand TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) to cater to the needs of export/import traders, reports The Hindu. The need has arisen as the container handling capacity of the existing terminal has reached a saturation point. The terminal will commence interim operations by deploying gantry cranes within two months and its full-fledged operations will commence from the beginning of 2014. The capacity of the port will increase to one million TEUs. The new terminal will have a draft of 12.8 m and the estimated project cost is Rs 312.23 crore (a crore is equal to 10-million).
