Wärtsilä to Equip KNOT's New Shuttle Tankers

Wärtsilä said it secured an order to supply its emissions abating volatile organic compounds (VOC) recovery system, together with an liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel gas supply system, for two new 124,000 DWT shuttle tankersordered by Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT), built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine yard in Korea. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in April.With this technology, the liquefied VOC is mixed with LNG and used as fuel for the main and auxiliary engines.

As marine operators and euipment manufacturers continue to explore alternative marine fuels as a means to help lower vessel emissions, technology group Wärtsilä said it has initiated combustion trials using ammonia.As part of the tests, ammonia was injected into a combustion research unit to better understand its properties. DSME to Build 2 LNG Tankers for KNOT

Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT), owner and operator of shuttle tanker operator, announced that it has been awarded a contract to build two  liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled Shuttle Tanker.According to the fully integrated industrial shipping company, the two new 124,000 DWT LNG fueled shuttle tankers will be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Two LNG Dual-Fuel DP Shuttle Tankers Unveiled

AET, a petroleum tanker owner and operator, has named its newest vessels, two of the world's first LNG Dual-Fuel Dynamic Positioning Shuttle Tankers (DPSTs). IMO Workshop in Thailand on Emission Cut

International Maritime Organization (IMO) said that reducing atmospheric pollution from ships and improving air quality is an integral part of its work. LR Approves HHI's VLCC 'Eco-Tanker' Design

Lloyd's Register (LR), international provider of classification, compliance and consultancy services to the marine industry, has presented Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) with approval in principle (AiP) for a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) ‘eco-tanker’ design, capable of using a combination of volatile organic compounds (VOC) mixed with LNG as fuel and Norsepower’s rotor sail solution for wind-assisted propulsion.This development was the result of a joint development project (JDP) collaboration between HHI, LR and Norsepower.The VOC recovery system was developed by HHI and will allow the VLCC to use fuel produced from naturally-occurring vapor from the cargo tank during operation.

Teekay Gets Norway's 'Green' Funding for Tankers

The marine energy transportation company Teekay Offshore has secured long-term financing from the Norwegian Government for four new shuttle tankers being built at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea.The shuttle tankers are all equipped with a new innovative technology developed by the maritime supplier Wärtsilä in cooperation with Teekay, resulting in zero volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions from the tankers.On behalf of the Norwegian Government, Export Credit Norway and GIEK have provided loan and guarantee of USD 165.5 million. The financing is part of a larger syndicate involving several commercial banks and a foreign export credit agency.

SHI Cuts Steel on 4th Teekay Shuttle Tanker

Furst steel was cut on Monday at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea for the fourth and final E-Shuttle tanker in a series for Teekay Offshore. UAE Signs IMO Treaty

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the latest State to accede to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)instrument providing rules for the prevention of air pollution from ships and energy efficiency requirements.This brings the total number of ratifications of MARPOL Annex VI to 93, representing 96.6% of world merchant shipping tonnage, said the UN body in a release.MARPOL Annex VI limits the main air pollutants contained in ships exhaust gas, including sulphur oxides and nitrous oxides, and prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances. Samsung Heavy Uses Eco-friendly Paint for Vessels

South Korea's shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has applied a solvent-free coating on its liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, saying it is the first case of a commercial ship applying such an eco-friendly paint.According to the company, it has successfully applied the solvent-free coating, which it jointly developed with Norwegian paint firm Jotun, to its 7,500 cubic-meter LNG carrier. A solvent is a chemical additive used to reduce the viscosity of paints for better application.Backed by the fact that there is virtually no solvent, a type of volatile organic compound, the solvent-free coating is eco-friendly paint which is safe from fire and explosion hazards and harmless to humans.

Monaco Accedes IMO Emissions Treaty

Wärtsilä VOC Recovery for AET Tankers

Wärtsilä will supply its Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) recovery technology, LNG fuel gas handling systems and the auxiliary engines for two new shuttle tankers being built for Singapore based AET Tankers at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea. The order, worth in total more than $37 million, was booked in January 2018. The ships will operate on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as the primary fuel, but VOC – the gas evaporating from the oil cargo tanks – will also be utilised as fuel by mixing it with the LNG, thereby reducing the vessels’ bunkering needs. This is made possible by Wärtsilä’s VOC recovery system, which by combining the VOC with the LNG, provides the potential for savings of over 3000 tons of fuel each year per vessel.

Northwest Seaport Alliance Becomes Greener

Air pollution related to Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) operations has decreased significantly since 2005, according to a regional report released recently. The report is the result of the 2016 Puget Sound Maritime Air Emissions Inventory, which provided an update to the 2005 baseline and 2011 inventories. The inventory estimated greenhouse gases, diesel particulate matter and a number of other pollutants, such as sulfur dioxides and volatile organic compounds. It focused on emissions from ships, harbor vessels, cargo-handling equipment, rail, heavy-duty trucks and other fleet vehicles associated with maritime activities. In 2015, the ports of Tacoma and Seattle launched the NWSA, a partnership to manage their marine cargo facilities and business.
