Energizing Naval & Coast Guard Missions
Moises DelToro at GE Vernovaâs Power Conversion business, discusses how deploying a Shipâs Electric Grid is a flexible way to accommodate growing energy demands for naval and coast guard vessels.A new age of electrificationWeâre in a new naval era and it is reshaping views about fleet mixes and capabilities. Modern fleets need to be mission-configurable, highly capable for military advantage, adaptable for technology insertion, but still affordable. The growing demand for vessel power is increasingly an enabler for mission systems, not just for platform propulsion.
Inland Waterways Report: Columbia-Snake River System

GREAT WORKBOATS: The Very Best 10 of 2018
MarineNews showcases the ten best of North Americaâs 2018 workboat deliveries. Domestic shipyard production is robust, innovative and getting greener. And, that translates into two kinds of âgreen.âAs the domestic offshore energy support sector slowly awakens, other sectors have been happy to take the spotlight in its absence. As always, and if a hull was delivered in 2018, we took a look at it, with several areas as a focus for inclusion into this edition. For my part, Iâm always excited when the U.S. boatbuilding sector can deliver for a foreign buyer. Weâve checked that box here. And, thatâs because we can compete on price, quality and when we doâŚ

Marine Shipping Sector Eyes LNG to Meet Clean Fuel Rules
With new global emissions standards looming, the marine shipping industry is increasingly looking at liquefied natural gas as alternative to high-sulfur bunker fuel, shipping and energy executives said at a global gas summit this week. Already used to fuel ferry fleets and cruise ships, LNG is gaining traction among freight and cargo shippers, despite a reluctance by the entrenched industry to make major changes. The stakes are high: the global shipping fleet now consumes about 4 million barrels per day of high sulfur fuel oil. "Ship owners are very conservative, they're generally a little slower to act... But it's going to happen," Peter Keller, chairman of SEA\LNG and executive VP of maritime firm Tote Inc, told Reuters at the World Gas Conference in Washington.

Already Strong on the US West Coast, Scania Looks East
Go east, young man, go east: Scaniaâs market reach grows with a key workboat contract. The reasons why are easy enough to see. When Scania announced its recent deal with Potomac Riverboat Company, part of the Entertainment Cruises family, to deliver eight, EPA Tier 3, 500 HP DI 13-liter engines in 2017 to power its high-speed, low-wake water taxis in Washington, DC, it marked the beginning of what is so far a good year for the San Antonio-based engine manufacturer. The 88-foot vessels will carry 149 passengers and will be built by Louisiana-based Metal Shark, to specifications from BMT Designers and Planners. The deal not only represents a significant number of individual engines, but more importantly for Scania, it cements the firmâs toehold in the red hot domestic ferry sector.
