World's Largest Nuclear Icebreaker Embarks on Arctic Voyage
A nuclear-powered ice breaker Russia says is the world’s largest and most powerful set off on Tuesday on a two-week journey to the Arctic as part of Moscow’s efforts to tap the region’s commercial potential.Known as Arktika, the nuclear icebreaker left St. Petersburg and headed for the Arctic port of Murmansk, a journey that marks its entry into Russia’s icebreaker fleet.Russian state firm Rosatomflot has called the vessel the world’s largest and most powerful icebreaker.
Russia Launches ‘World’s Largest’ Nuclear Icebreaker
Russia has unveiled Arktika, touted as the world’s largest and most powerful nuclear icebreaker, during a launching ceremony on June 16 at Baltic Shipyard in St Petersburg. The 173 meter long, 34 meter wide Arktika is the lead nuclear icebreaker ordered by Russia's Rosatom state nuclear agency for navigation through the Northern Sea Route, and more specifically the delivery of hydrocarbons to Asian markets. “There are no analogs of the icebreaker such as the Arktika in the world,” said Rosatom CEO Sergey Kirienko at the launching ceremony.
Keel Laid for Russia’s Next Generation Icebreaker
The world’s biggest nuclear-powered icebreaker keel laying ceremony took place of at the Baltic Shipyard on 26 May 2015. Heads of Atomfflot, the Baltic Shipyard and the RS Branch Office for Nuclear Vessels signed a Keel Laying Acceptance Report of the first serial nuclear-powered icebreaker, project 22220. Bookmark nuclear-powered icebreaker "Sibir" was timed to the anniversary of the Baltic plant, which on May 26 turned 159 years . In the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of State Corporation "Rosatom" Sergei Kiriyenko, the president of USC Alexey Rakhmanov, the governor of the Murmansk region Marina Kovtun and other honorary guests of the event laid the first serial icebreaker project 22220, dubbed "Siberia".
IMO Secretary-General to Make Arctic Voyage
IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu departs later this week (Thursday, August 15) on a five-day Arctic sea voyage as part of a fact-finding mission to the region. Mr. Sekimizu will be the guest of the government of the Russia aboard the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy as she voyages on the Northern Sea Route that links Europe and northern Russia. Mr. Sekimizu will commence his voyage from the port of Dikson, in the Kara Sea, before undertaking a 1,680 nm trip to Pevek, in the East Siberian Sea.
Nuclear Icebreaker Cruises
The world’s largest nuclear-powered icebreaker “50 years of Victory” will take tourists to the top of the world five times this summer, starting from June 26. Each trip takes ten days and costs 800 000 rubles (€19 800). Cruise traffic to the North Pole is very lucrative for Atomflot, says General Director Vyacheslav Ruksha: “It provides us with 70-80 days of work. The contract we had with Rosmorport on work in the Baltic was for 100 days, so the cruise work is just as good”, RIA Novosti informs.
