The operation of autonomous vessels can meet, if not exceed, current collision avoidance (COLREG) rules, as demonstrated during the recently completed £1.3 million ($1.8 million) MAXCMAS (MAchine eXecutable Collision regulations for Marine Autonomous Systems) research project. Project partners Rolls-Royce, Lloyd’s Register, Warsash Maritime Academy (WMA), Queen’s University Belfast and Atlas Elektronik (AEUK) found that use of newly developed algorithms allowed existing COLREGs to remain relevant in a crewless environment…

Last week’s Nautical Institute London Command Seminar saw the appointment of Captain John Lloyd RD MBA FNI as the Institute’s new chief executive officer, succeeding Philip Wake OBE RD MSc FNI, who is retiring after 14 years in post. Speaking at Trinity House, the venue for the third of the Institute’s 2017 command seminar series, Captain Lloyd said, “I am delighted to be leading the next phase of development at The Nautical Institute, at a time of great change for our industry.

Parker Kittiwake has  announced the launch of the Gold Guide – a definitive reference guide to fuel, hydraulic, and lubricating oil for the marine industry. This first-of-a-kind, comprehensive resource provides vessel owners and operators with all the information needed to understand all aspects of fuel, lube, and hydraulic oil from first principles to testing, monitoring, characteristics and specifications. Furthermore it gives a comprehensive insight into interpreting test results and understanding the potential impact these can have on operational performance and efficiency.

InterManager, the trade association for in-house and third party ship managers, together with The Warsash Maritime Academy, has presented the findings of its fatigue study, Project MARTHA, to The International Maritime Organization (IMO). Speaking at the presentation last night, Capt Kuba Szymanski, Secretary-General of InterManager urged the maritime industry to take notice of the findings as the industry recruits aspiring seafarers. The report highlights growing levels of fatigue, particularly among Masters and Watch Keepers, and noted that motivation was a major factor in fatigue experienced by seafarers. A Master’s place on a ship is central to its performance, a claim which many would agree with. The performance of seafarers onboard is paramount to a vessel’s operation and efficiency.

LR is participating in the MAXCMAS project, a £1.27million collaborative research project that aims to investigate, develop and implement real-time collision avoidance algorithms for autonomous maritime vessels. The MAXCMAS project aims to develop COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972) compliant collision avoidance navigation for autonomous ships and other Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). Compliance with current and future regulations is instrumental to the wide-scale use of USVs at sea. Being able to demonstrate satisfactory autonomous operation that meets the COLREGs is also pivotal to maritime safety. The project also hopes to carry out comprehensive machine execution of the COLREGs and demonstrate these in part in real-world representative sea trials.

A unique program of three specialist events for the sub IMO / sub 24 meter professional sector is being held ‘back to back’ at the Grand Harbour in Southampton, U.K. this October. The fast moving workshop style program brings together an international group of experts armed with the latest knowledge to identify problems that affect the maritime sector worldwide – and highlight potential solutions. Event organizer and workshop lead John Haynes said, “We are really pleased with the diversity of high level presenters from military, commercial and SAR backgrounds.

‘Next Generation Marine Power & Propulsion’ is a fast moving networking event that focuses on viable solutions for vessels of all sizes. More than 20 expert speakers will highlight a range of unique opportunities. The program covers three phases; ‘Here and Now Technology’ - considers how the U.K. and global marine industry can utilize the latest engineering. ‘Next Generation Systems’ - are within a few years of commercial release. ‘Innovation and Future Possibilities’ - are pushing the boundaries far and wide. The event is being held at the Grand Harbour, Southampton from April 26-28, 2016.

UK P&I Club, Thomas Miller, sponsored cadet Vicki Boltitho met Princess Anne at Winchester Cathedral's annual 'Shipping Festival Service'. Princess Anne’s visit was a tribute to those working in the country’s shipping industry. At the cathedral service she read the lesson – from John 21.1-14, where Jesus appears to his disciples while they are fishing. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Southampton the Rt Rev Jonathan Frost and was also attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, the mayors of Winchester and Southampton and other dignitaries.

Warsash Maritime Academy will welcome the eighth scaled ship model to its fleet in May 2013. It will be the first container ship to join the existing fleet at Southampton Solent University’s Ship Handling Center when it is officially launched at a special ceremony. Industry leaders, dignitaries and University staff will be present at the launch and naming ceremony which will be presided over by Admiral, The Right Honorable Lord West of Spithead, at the Center in Timsbury, near Romsey on Thursday 16 May 2013.

L-3 MPRI has launched the first liquid cargo handling simulator (LCHS) model for handysize products tankers capable of carrying mixed loads of crude oil, products and Class 2 chemicals. The simulator provides lifelike training in all aspects of operating such tankers. MPRI also introduced the WISE Assessment Tool that intelligently gauges students’ ability to perform multiple critical tasks at once. The new tool works across all of MPRI’s LCHS models. Determining the proper compatibility of handysize products tankers’ oil and chemical cargoes is vital to avoiding major safety risks including spills, explosions and fires.
