AMPOL Completes Downed Platform Project
American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL), a leading oil spill response and total environmental solutions provider, has completed a platform recovery project in Amelia, La., announced CEO Kirk Headley. From planning to implementation, the total project took approximately five years and included lifting the platform and remediating hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulfide on the recovered platform that had been trapped beneath 100 feet of mud. The cleaning and remediation processes were completed by air from man liftsand subsequently the platform was deemed environmentally safe for recycling.
Navy’s Eco-friendly Waste Disposal System
An environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution to the disposal of oily sludge waste has been developed by engineers, microbiologists, and chemists from Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii (NAVFAC) Hawaii and NAVFAC Engineering Service Center (ESC). The solution makes it possible to remediate oily sludge waste at Pearl Harbor instead of shipping it to the mainland for disposal, which is a large cost burden and liability for the Navy. Remediating the waste is also a sustainable practice. Natural elements and processes are used, and the by-products of the remediation are natural and harmless to the environment. The oily sludge waste remediation project began as a pilot study in 2004 at the Bilge Water/Oily Waste Treatment Facility at Pearl Harbor.
Mahoney Sworn in as Assistant Secretary of Commerce For Oceans and Atmosphere
At a Commerce Department ceremony in Washington, D.C., today James R. Mahoney, was sworn in as the assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere. In this capacity, he is a chief manager of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the nation's top science agency for oceans and the atmosphere under its current administrator Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher, USN (ret.). Commerce Secretary Don Evans administered the oath of office. "President Bush and I are very pleased to have Jim Mahoney on the NOAA team," said Commerce Secretary Don Evans. NOAA manages the U.S. operational weather and environmental satellites, a fleet of research ships and aircraft, and 12 environmental research laboratories.
