Op/Ed: Real World Infrastructure Needs

Over the last few months, the inland waterways system has been particularly stressed by both emergency and Mother Nature-inflicted outages at key locks and dams. Lock and Dam (L&D) 52 on the Ohio River was closed September 6-14 when the dam’s low-lift wooden wickets could not be raised to hold a stable pool for navigation, halting shipping on the river. Infrastructure Firm Announces Projects of the Year

Infrastructure firm CG/LA Infrastructure announced the winners of its coveted Project of the Year award as voted upon by infrastructure industry insiders. “These transformative infrastructure investments are critical to our economic security and worldwide competitiveness,” CG/LA Infrastructure President and CEO Norman F. Anderson said. Project of the Year awards are given in five categories covering strategy, financing, engineering, job creation and the environment. All projects have specific business opportunities to be realized in the next three to 18 months. The winners – announced at the 5th Annual North American Strategic Infrastructure Leadership Forum at the historic Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Wärtsilä Hamworthy Wins Contract

Wärtsilä Hamworthy has won a contract from Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. to supply two Membrane BioReactors (MBRs) to the 141,000gt newbuilding under construction for Carnival group member P&O Cruises. Hamworthy has delivered more than 25 MBR advanced wastewater systems to the world’s largest cruise ship operator, Carnival. The company’s MBR system produces the highest quality discharge without requiring any addition or generation of chemicals that are hazardous to the environment or vessel operation. For this contract Wärtsilä Hamworthy will also be responsible for UV polishing.

Wärtsilä Hamworthy Wins Fincantieri Order

Wärtsilä Hamworthy has won a contract from Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. to supply two Membrane BioReactors (MBRs) to the 141,000gt newbuilding under construction for Carnival group member P&O Cruises. Hamworthy has delivered more than 25 MBR advanced wastewater systems to the world’s largest cruise ship operator, Carnival. The company’s MBR system produces the highest quality discharge without requiring any addition or generation of chemicals that are hazardous to the environment or vessel operation. For this contract Wärtsilä Hamworthy will also be responsible for UV polishing. The 3,611 passenger capacity vessel is set to enter service in March 2015. It will be the largest to be constructed for the British market and the order includes an option for a second vessel.

Evac On Board Atlântico Sul Shipyard's New Tankers

Evac's complete wastewater system is onboard MT João Cândido, the first Suezmax tanker recently delivered by Atlântico Sul Shipyard (EAS) for Transpetro. Evac was selected for the first series of ten 160,0000 dwt Suezmax tankers and for the series of five 110,000 dwt Aframax tankers, also being built by Atlântico Sul Shipyard, the largest and most modern shipyard in Brazil.
