MAN Propulsion Package to Power GTS' Tanker Newbuilds

THSD Frederick Paup to Sport Schottel RudderPropellers

The largest U.S.-flagged, self propelled trailing suction hopper dredger (THSD) Frederick Paup will be propelled by a trio of Schottel RudderPropellers manufactured at the German Wismar production site. Scheduled to enter operation in 2023, the dredger will be owned and operated by Manson Construction Co., and is currently under construction at the Keppel AmFELS Shipyard in Brownsville, Texas. It will be 128 m in length, have a 25 m breadth and about 9 m draught and will have a hopper volume of 11,500 cu.

Full SCHOTTEL Propulsion for Jan De Nul Crane Vessel

Jan De Nul has ordered a heavy lift crane vessel capable of lifting 5,000 metric tons from the CMHI Haimen shipyard in China. The vessel, to be named Les Alizés and due to enter service in 2022, will be equipped with a full SCHOTTEL propulsion package, including four rudderpropellers, two retractable rudderpropellers and two transverse thrusters.The main propulsion system of the crane vessel consists of four electrically driven SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers type SRP 610 FP – each with an input power of 3,000 kilowatts and a propeller diameter of 3.3 etersm – installed at the stern.

SCHOTTEL to Propel St. Lawrence Seaway Tug

German propulsion manufacturer SCHOTTEL said it has been selected to equip a newly built harbor tugboat for the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) with medium-sized azimuth thrusters. The vessel is under construction at the U.S. shipyard Washburn & Doughty in Maine. UV-C Keeping Ship Hulls Free from Biofouling

The presence of biofouling on the hull of a ship increases the drag from the water during sailing and thereby the fuel consumption, which results in increased CO2 emissions as well as increased costs for the ship owner. Paints applied to the underwater areas on the hull of ships therefore often contain biocides to hinder biofouling growth or possess non-stick properties, allowing a release of the fouling when the vessels pick up speed.AkzoNobel is working with Royal Philips to…

Not All EALs are Created Equal

What is an EAL? Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) are defined by the EPA as offering these three characteristics. First, they must be “biodegradable” - biodegrading into carbon dioxide and water by ≥ 60% or more within 28 days (according to OECD 301B or ASTM D7373 methods). Next, they must be “minimally toxic,” causing only a light impact on the aquatic environment (LC50> 100mg/L for lubricants and LC50>1000mg/L). Lastly, they are “not bioaccumulative,” and must have a low propensity to bioaccumulate in organisms.

IHC Seals Earn DNV GL Verification

IHC Sealing Solutions has received an important third-party verification from DNV GL, a  ship and offshore classification society. This means that the company’s Supreme Ventus and Supreme Athmos seals (that guarantee zero oil emissions) are now compatible with mineral oils that are used in U.S. waters in compliance with the Vessel General Permit (VGP). On December 19, 2013, the revised VGP, issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), came into force. This new permit mandates the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants for all oil-to-water interfaces, such as stern tube and thruster seals, on all merchant vessels that are 79 feet or longer and sailing in U.S. coastal and inland waters.

MPS Holds Open House

There was record attendance at the Maritime Propulsion Services BV (MPS) open day on May 23 when more than 200 delegates from shipyards, classification societies and workshops around the world gathered together in Drunen. Apart from the four propellers which were in the workshop for repair, on display were some of the latest developments in quality control as well as repair procedures and technology. These included state of the art nondestructive ultrasonic techniques to inspect either for porosities in bronze castings or weld repairs on propeller blades.

Marine Diesel Purification Breakthrough by SurePure

Liquid photopurification specialist company SurePure Inc. apprises of a breakthrough in the microbiological purification of contaminated marine diesel fuel, using SurePure's technology as an alternative to biocide addition or excessive micro-filtration. SurePure explains that the contamination of diesel fuel is a significant problem for the maritime shipping industry, leading to extensive waste of fuel and environmental contamination. The industry is seeking to improve conventional means by which it cleans fuel where micro-organisms have proliferated. SurePure, in conjunction with a South African oil industry consultant Lemon Tree Holdings, applied its proprietary Turbulator technology in a test conducted in April at Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Hamworthy Improves on Separator Performance

Hamworthy signed a contract with FPSO Owner OSX 1 Leasing B.V., a subsidiary of OSX Brasil S.A., for delivery of its newest generation Vessel Internal Electrostatic Coalescer (VIEC) technology to the FPSO OSX-1. Upon completion of customization works currently in progress in , the FPSO OSX-1 will be delivered by OSX to its customer OGX Petróleo e Gás Ltda. under charter arrangements, for deployment in the basin, offshore . ROV Sent to Determine Oil at 900 Feet

ROV will be used in an attempt to determine if oil is present on sunken WWII tanker. Global Diving and Salvage Inc. has been contracted by the United States Coast Guard to determine if oil is present aboard the sunken ship S.S. Montebello, which sits 900 feet below the ocean surface approximately 6.5 miles off the coast of Cambria, California. The S.S. Montebello sank after a Japanese submarine torpedoed the large oil tanker on December 23, 1941. The vessel broke apart landing upright with her bow separated from the majority of the wreckage. To date, no signs of leakage have been detected, and from previous visual inspections by submarine, the cargo section appears to be intact. The possibility of future oil release has prompted the U.S.

Global Diving and Salvage Inc. has been contracted by the United States Coast Guard to determine if oil is present aboard the sunken ship S.S. Montebello, which sits 900 feet below the ocean surface approximately 6.5 miles off the coast of Cambria, California. The S.S. Montebello sank after a Japanese submarine torpedoed the large oil tanker on December 23, 1941. The vessel broke apart landing upright with her bow separated from the majority of the wreckage. To date, no signs of leakage have been detected, and from previous visual inspections by submarine, the cargo section appears to be intact. The possibility of future oil release has prompted the U.S. Coast Guard to contract Global to determine the integrity of the cargo section and its contents. Coast Guard Capt.

The on-scene assessment of the sunken World War II tanker S.S. Montebello is nearly complete off the coast of Cambria, CA. The unified command, led by the Coast Guard and California Department of Fish and Game's Office of Spill Prevention and Response, has determined that there is no substantial oil threat from the Montebello to the surrounding waters and shorelines. The S.S. Montebello sank after a Japanese submarine torpedoed the large oil tanker on December 23, 1941. The vessel broke apart landing upright with her bow separated from the majority of the wreckage.
