The new International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations aim to significantly reduce emissions of sulfur oxides, which are responsible for atmospheric acidification. This means that vessels may only use fuels with sulfur levels of up to 0.5 percent as of 1 January 2020.The current permitted level is 3.5 percent. However, another option is available. Damen’s BWM in Eight EU Ports
Ship owners are now able to treat their unmanaged ballast water or load cleaned ballast water in eight different Northern European ports using Damen’s unique IMO certified InvaSave ballast water management system. In a cooperation between Damen Green Solutions and Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC), this ballast water reception/bunkering service will be available in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Brest, Dunkerque, Vlissingen, Den Helder, Stellendam and Harlingen. Damen’s InvaSave is the world’s first external ballast water treatment unit designed primarily to offer ship owners a port-based ballast water solution. With this cooperation, vessels coming into these eight ports will be able to take advantage of a one-stop-shop for their ballast water treatment requirements.

Wärtsilä to Retrofit Two Ferries with New Ballast Water Solution
Two Ro-Ro ferries owned by U.K.-based Condor Ferries are to be retrofitted with Wärtsilä's new AQUARIUS READY ballast water management system (BWMS) solution. The AQUARIUS READY concept has been developed by Wärtsilä to prepare vessels for the fitting of BWMS, while minimizing vessel downtime, thereby enabling more efficient operations. The contract was signed in February 2014 and the final equipment delivery will take place within 12 months from the ratification of the IMO Ballast Water Convention. Preparation work has already been undertaken onboard the ferries.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) specialist Dometic Marine will launch the Marine Air Chiller Compact to the commercial, work boat and military markets at this year's Seawork International. Featuring an innovative and compact space-saving design, the chilled water system is suitable for a range of applications including cooling of on-board spaces and marine electronics. The Marine Air Chiller Compact provides 16,000 to 24,000 BTUs (British thermal unit) and easily attaches to air handlers to provide ideal temperatures in the pilothouse or crew accommodation areas. New Ribcrafts for Clinton First Aid & Rescue
Ribcraft recently delivered an AF 14 to Clinton First Aid and Rescue located in Clinton, N.J. The fully inflatable boat, which is part of Ribcraft’s AF line of inflatable boats, will be used by the department for shallow water rescues and applications requiring easy deployment. The 13.8-ft AF 14 features heavy duty 1880 dtx Hypalon tubes, removable rigid floor, and an innovative hull and tube design designed to carry large payloads on a plane while at the same time delivering unsurpassed performance and maneuverability.
Captain Phillips to Publicly thank USS Bainbridge
For the first time since his dramatic rescue at sea, Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama will publicly thank the commanding officer and crew of the USS Bainbridge during a ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia on November 19. The ceremony will take place on the fantail of guided missile cruiser at 2 p.m. The USS Bainbridge will be moored on the downtown Norfolk waterfront. The Maersk container ship was captured by rogue pirates off the coast of Somalia on April 8. Captain Phillips offered himself as a hostage in exchange for the safety of his crew. For four days, while the world watched, Phillips was held captive in a 25-foot lifeboat.
Clean Propulsion Concept for Broström Tankers
MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Alpha, Denmark has been awarded the contract to supply a twin medium speed main engine package to drive AziPull propellers for a series of 14,500 DWT Oil Products and Chemical tankers. MAN B&W Holeby GenSets will be supplied by a Chinese licensee. The vessels are under construction for Broström Tankers AB, Göteborg, Sweden. Four vessels will be built by Jinling Shipyard, Nanjing, China. The newbuildings are scheduled for delivery during 2006 and 2007. Together with Broström Tankers AB, the naval architects and designers Skipskonsulent A/S, Bergen from the Vik & SandVik Group, Norway, have been in charge of this state-of-the-art shortsea tanker concept, optimized for North European trade.
