Panama Canal Secures Steady Draft

Innovative Ballast Water Solutions: Damen's InvaSave

Since the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention entered into force on September 8, 2017, newbuild vessels have to meet the D2 standard of the Ballast Water Management Convention. In this situation, the Inland Coastal Tanker Elena H. will make her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Argentina on her own keel. Following her arrival, she will remain permanently in local waters.Instead of installing a ballast water management system (BWMS) on board the vessel for this single trip, Damen’s InvaSave supplied clean D2-standard ballast water for ballasting of the vessel in the Netherlands.

New US Ballast Water Research Lab Opened

Traveling across the globe from port to port, the U.S. Navy fleet transports sailors and Marines, aircraft, and supplies. Unfortunately, ships can also unintentionally transport stowaways, small organisms which live in ballast water. Most people would not look at small organisms like mitten crabs or zebra mussels and think they are a major threat to the environment – and in their natural habitats they pose no threat. But what happens when these organisms are introduced into a new ecosystem? McDermott Yard in Mexico Now a Free Trade Zone

Dooley Named President at Choice Ballast

Ecochlor’s BWT Systems Receives ABS Approval

Ecochlor, Inc. announced that it has received Product Design Assessment (PDA) Approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for their full range of ballast water treatment systems (BWTS). These systems have the capacity to treat ballast water flow rates of up to 16,000 m3/hr. Prior to ABS PDA Approval, the Ecochlor BWTS received IMO G9 Final Approval in September 2010. In November 2011, Ecochlor was granted IMO Type Approval (G8) from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Ten consecutive test cycles on land and aboard ship over a two-year period resulted in no surviving organisms after treatment. With testing results of all zeros, it proved that the system could meet or exceed proposed US requirements of at least 10X IMO standards.
