Singapore Scheme to Tackle Lack of Marine Engineers

Singapore has launched an initiative to attract more locals to take up a career as a marine engineer. The joint venture between unions, government and industry aims to address an acute shortage. A new S$1.2 million Tripartite Engineering Training Award (TETA) Programme was launched by Lim Swee Say, the Minister for Manpower. According to a press release, TETA is a joint initiative by Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), National Trades Union Congress’ Employment and Employability Institute (e2i). New Containership Rules and Guidance from Lloyd’s Register

Decade long, and ongoing, research program has developed a clearer understanding of the forces imposed on ship structures. Lloyd’s Register’s updated Containership Rules came into effect in July 2014 and these new rules are supported by Lloyd’s Register ShipRight Procedures covering whipping and springing analysis. Following the ShipRight Procedure will enable the granting of new Lloyd’s Register class notations ShipRight WDA – Whipping design assessment procedure, and ShipRight FDA (SPR) – Springing fatigue design assessment procedure, to enhance the response of ships’ structures that are subject to springing and whipping at sea. Drydocks World in Discussions with Singapore Delegation

Khamis Juma Buamim, Chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World received the Singapore's Non-Resident Ambassador (NRA) to the United Arab Emirates, HE Tee Tua Ba and his accompanying delegation and held discussions on topics of mutual interest. Discussions revolved around the company’s future business strategy and action plan for the company’s Singapore-based operations, areas of mutual co-operation and exchange of know-how and technical expertise and identifying areas of further development of relations and partnerships. Drydocks World is actively engaged with several maritime organizations at various levels in Singapore such as Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI).

Worker Safety Program Launched in Singapore

The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Clean Technology Centre has announced the WDA-DNV Excellence In Safety Training (WEST) programme to raise safety standards and skills for the manufacturing workforce to benefit 80 local workers over the next year. The programme is the first collaboration between WDA and DNV to equip the Singapore manufacturing workforce with safety excellence skills which are critical in managing risks and preventing major accidents for the high value-added manufacturing sector. At times, these companies could have neglected safety and may result in dramatic loss of economic returns and social losses.
