The Board of Directors of Hendry Marine Industries, Inc. announced the appointment of Mr. John P. Gallagher as President of Gulf Marine Repair effective January 29, 2019. Gallagher, a graduate of The Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, is a seasoned maritime executive with over 30 years of leadership experience inoperations management, naval engineering, ship construction and ship repair. Highlights of Mr. Gallagher’s career include VP Operations, Derecktor Shipyard; Chief Executive, BMT International, Inc.; and President, Northeast Ship Repair.

Hydrocomp’s ProCad facilitates in-house Process Control of Propeller Design and Manufacture. Maritime Tactical Systems Inc. The Glosten Associates, a Seattle naval architecture and marine engineering consulting firm announced new leadership changes. The Glosten Associates Board of Directors elected John L.R. Edgar, III, as President effective January 1, 2011. Edgar will serve as Glosten’s fourth President since its founding in 1958. William L. Hurley, Jr., having served as President since 2001, will serve as Chairman of the Board. Edgar, a graduate of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, joined Glosten in 1988.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers is pleased to announce graduate and undergraduate scholarship winners. $165,000 in scholarship awards have been made by the Society for the 2010-11 academic year. Eleven Graduate Scholarships were awarded. Recipients are Stephanie Chin, Seth Cooley, Jonathan Dowsett, Austin French, William Garland, Daniel Givan, David Gross, Matthew Lankowski, Christopher McKesson, Daniel Place, and Douglas Rigterink. 43 undergraduates also received awards. Most notable among these are Ryan Pfeifer of Webb Institute, winner of the Mandell and Lester Rosenblatt Undergraduate Scholarship, and Christopher D. Rose from Webb Institute, winner of the Robert N. Herbert Undergraduate Scholarship.

Lawrence Robert “Larry” Glosten, founder of The Glosten Associates, a Seattle naval architecture firm, died February 22, 2010 in his home on Bainbridge Island, Wash. He was 91. Glosten graduated from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1940. He subsequently served as a Ship Repair Officer and dockmaster at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard during the early months of World War II. His naval duty included assignment to the Bureau of Ships Preliminary Design Division and, later, to the Bikini Atoll atomic weapon tests.

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) announced that Douglas Wolff and James Cole have been named Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) Fellows. Doug Wolff joined EBDG in 1992 and serves as Vice President of Staff Operations. He has a BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Washington, Oregon, North Carolina and Louisiana. For over 30 years, Doug has applied his engineering expertise to new vessel design, modifications and construction liaison. He is one of the firm's workboat experts, having extensive experience designing barges, ATBs, tugs, towboats and research vessels.

The Council of Intertanko elected Mr Stephen Van Dyck, Chairman of Maritrans Inc., as its new chairman, as nominated by the Executive Committee. Van Dyck said "It is an honor for me to be entrusted with the Intertanko chairmanship. While the buoyancy of the current freight market raises our spirits, there remains much work to be done in the next few years. My initial focus will be on sharpening our processes for guiding Intertanko; implementing a review of our mission and strategy; and expanding our membership. The early 1980s witnessed the birth of the first generation Autohydro by Coastdesign Inc. (now called Autoship Systems Corporation (ASC)). Autohydro was one of a very few PC-based first principles stability and longitudinal strength programs available on the market of the day. Running in DOS, Autohydro quickly became world-renowned as a robust, dependable design and analysis tool for the creation of trim and stability books. Even today, some users of these early versions of Autohydro call ASC asking for advice. Since those early times, ASC has continued to improve Autohydro. The most recent release, Autohydro 6.0, includes many new features that hundreds of naval architects around the world rely on for their hydrostatic and strength calculations.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) awarded their highest honor, the David W. Taylor Medal for notable achievement in naval architecture or marine engineering, to recently retired ABS Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Donald Liu at the society’s Annual Banquet during the SNAME Marine Technology Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C. vessels, and then extended that pioneering approach with the development of the innovative SafeHull system. Larry Rigdon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rigdon Marine, announced the appointment of Jim Whitley as Director of Technical Services. Mr. Whitely will be responsible for vessel engineering, new construction, maintenance and repair, vessel documentation, and regulatory compliance. “With over twenty five years of offshore marine experience, Jim possesses a vast knowledge of shipyard management, engineering, and new construction,” Rigdon said. The Glosten Associates has named John Edgar to serve as the firm’s Director of Engineering. In this role, he is responsible for establishing and maintaining the firm’s ‘best practices’ engineering processes. Edgar, a senior naval architect and firm principal, is a 1987 graduate of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. He has 20 years of broad vessel design and project management experience, and recently served as Glosten’s Program Manager for Boeing’s Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX) Platform project. Edgar specializes in the conceptual design of high-performance vessels. Tom Bringloe served in this capacity for over 25 years. Bringloe specializes in structural design and analysis and has been instrumental in developing the firm’s support to complex offshore operations.

The Board of Directors of Maritrans Inc. has appointed Philip J. Doherty to chief executive officer effective April 1, 2003. Stephen A. Van Dyck, former chief executive officer, will continue to be employed by the company as chairman of Maritrans Inc. Stephen A. Van Dyck, chairman of the board of directors, commented, "I am proud to have served as the leader of Maritrans and its predecessors for over 28 years.
