The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is snapping back from the doldrums of COVID-19, wrapping up a strong first half of 2023 with a slew of awarded dredging work.“The federal government is no different from state and local governments, nor the private sector when it comes to COVID-19 work related recovery and USACE is not an exception,” said William P. What’s Next for Eastern Shipbuilding?

When Hurricane Michael slammed the Florida Panhandle in October 2018, the deadly category 5 storm inflicted billions in damages to the region, tearing apart homes and businesses in its path. Among those severely impacted was Eastern Shipbuilding Group, which suffered a nearly direct hit at its Allanton shipyard, located about 15 miles east of the company’s headquarters and main yard in Panama City.Eastern, which had been scheduled to begin building the first of up to 11 Heritage-class Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC) for the U.S.

Eastern Launches R.B. Weeks Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) on Friday launched the R.B. Weeks, the second trailing suction hopper dredge the Florida shipbuilder has constructed for Weeks Marine, Inc.The R.B. Weeks is named in honor of Richard B. Weeks, a co-founder of Weeks Marine and married to Magdalen Weeks, the namesake of the sister vessel Magdalen, built by Eastern and delivered in 2017.The new 356-foot trailing suction hopper dredge is being constructed at ESG’s Allanton Shipyard and has a hopper capacity of 8,550 cubic yards. The vessel outfitting and trials will be conducted at Eastern’s Port St.

Royal IHC Ships Equipment for Weeks' New Hopper Dredge

A shipment of Royal IHC's equipment is traveling from Europe to the U.S. to be installed on Weeks Marine's new trailing suction hopper dredge (TSHD) R.B. Weeks, currently under construction at Eastern Shipbuilding Group's Allanton shipyard in Florida. In May of 2020, Royal IHC and Weeks Marine Inc. entered into a contract for the engineering and equipment delivery for the 6,540-cubic-meter-capacity newbuild, an identical vessel to the Magdalen delivered to Weeks from Eastern in 2017. The American shipbuilding scene, filled with participants constructing all manner of vessels, has been navigating through stormy times (lately, yards along the Gulf Coast have literally been dealing with storms). The orders for newbuild, repair and conversion projects continue to flow in—albeit at a reduced pace—and the boats and ships go down the ways into the water, but the overall panorama has seen tremendous sea changes as the business has shifted.Maritime businesses worldwide have been grappling with currents both internal and external.

(WMI) was presented with the first issued Certificates of Inspection (COIs) for achieving full compliance with new USCG “Subchapter M” regulations on the 2,000 HP Tug Elizabeth and the 3,000 HP Tug Katherine. Weeks Marine Orders $60 Mln Cutter Dredger

Weeks Marine Inc. (WMI) has ordered a new $60 million oceangoing, 30-inch hydraulic cutter suction dredge, the JS Chatry. Construction is underway in Belle Chase, La., at C&C Marine and Repair. “While the national coastal restoration and protection market is growing, we are especially optimistic about the market here in Louisiana. We have taken note of the Governor’s and the Legislature’s commitment to the Master Plan and the protection of critical dedicated funds for their intended purpose,” said Richard S. US-built TSHD Magdalen Launched

Trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Magdalen was launched on March 31, 2017 at Eastern Shipbuilding Group’s (ESG) Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. The 356’ twin screw dredger is being constructed for the U.S.’s second largest dredging contractor, Weeks Marine Inc. Having already been earmarked for a project at the end of this year, the TSHD is expected to have a significant impact when it enters the U.S. dredging market. Magdalen has been specifically designed for beach nourishment and capital dredging works and is highly automated.

WMI, ESG Sign Contract to Complete Dredger

Weeks Marine, Inc. (WMI) and Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) signed a contract to complete the construction of its Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger, the MAGDALEN. This 356’ Twin Screw Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger will be constructed at Eastern’s Allanton Panama City, Florida facility. Weeks Marine is another Eastern repeat client. Weeks Marine Awarded DoD Mississippi Dredge Contract

US Department of Defense inform that Weeks Marine, Inc., Covington, Louisiana, was awarded an $18,700,000 firm-fixed-price contract with options for Mississippi River hopper dredge disposal from Baton Rouge to the Gulf of Mexico. DoD explains that work will be performed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with an estimated completion date of Feb. 10, 2015. Fiscal 2014 other procurement funds in the amount of $18,700,000 are being obligated at the time of the award. DofD Latest Dredging & Ship Repair Contracts

Weeks Marine has been awarded a substantial dredging contract, and NASSCO a contract for the phased maintenance of  'USS Peleliu'. Weeks Marine Inc., Covington, La., was awarded an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, firm-fixed-price contract with a maximum value of $12,728,225 for dredging services in support of various projects. Work will be performed in West Baton Rouge Parish, La.; West Feliciana Parish, La.; St. Martin Parish, La.; and St. Mary Parish, La. The type of appropriation will be determined with each order. The bid was solicited through the Internet, with three bids received. The Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans, La., is the contracting activity (W912P8-13-D-0010). GE Marine Engines Grab Orders at IWS 2012

GE Marine take 16 orders at the 2012 International WorkBoat Show (IWS) in New Orleans to deliver L250 and V250 engines. A combined total of 16 engines have been ordered for newbuilds and repowers by new customer Hyak Maritime and by an existing customer of GE Marine, Weeks Marine, Inc. Headquartered in Delaware, Hyak Maritime selected GE engines for the main propulsion of two 120-foot ASD Titan Class tugs. GE Marine will provide four 2,679 horsepower 8L250 engines to power these tugs. One of the largest marine dredging and tunneling contractors in the United States and Canada, Weeks Marine, Inc. has ordered four 6L250 and eight 16V250 engines to power and repower dredge pumps, serve as main propulsion and power gensets. These GE Marine L250 and V250 engines are ABS classed and meet U.S.

BAE Commences Construction of Hopper Dredge

Executives from the two companies gathered this week at the BAE Systems Mobile shipyard to oversee the initial cutting of steel.

BAE Systems has begun construction on the MV Magdalen, an 8,500 cubic yard capacity trailing suction hopper dredge for Weeks Marine, Inc. Executives from the two companies gathered this week at the BAE Systems Mobile shipyard to oversee the initial cutting of steel for the vessel’s first module, which will weigh 130 tons. When complete in 2014, the entire vessel will measure 340 feet long and 79 feet wide, with a draft of 27 feet. “A tremendous amount of effort has led us to this point,” said Vic Rhoades, director and general manager at BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama.

IHC Merwede Wins €200m in Orders

HC Merwede won orders for vessels and equipment in its core markets of dredging and offshore to the value of €200m. The latest agreements confirmed by IHC Merwede include: a new pipelaying vessel for Subsea 7; an engineering and components package for the build of a trailing suction hopper dredger with BAE Systems (USA); an environmentally friendly deep-water dredger for Zheijang Dredging (China); and a 5,000-tonne capacity carousel-lay system for Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. IHC Merwede’s assignment with Subsea 7 is for the design, engineering and construction of a new advanced pipelaying vessel, which will have an overall length of 146m, a beam of 30m and a Class-2 dynamic positioning system.

BAE Mobile Yard Wins Dredge Contract

BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama has been selected by Weeks Marine, Inc. to build an 8,500 cubic yard capacity twin screw trailing suction hopper dredge at its Mobile, Alabama facility. Upon completion, dimensions of the vessel will be 356-feet long, 79-feet wide with a draft of 27 feet. Weeks Marine, Inc., which has its dredging headquarters in Covington, Louisiana, is one of the largest providers of dredging services in the United States. This will be a state-of-the art trailing suction hopper dredge and the first designed by IHC Merwede to be built in the United States. IHC Merwede, located in The Netherlands, is a world leader in the design and construction of advanced dredging equipment.

New USACE Contracts

Weeks Marine, Inc., Covington, La., was awarded on Feb. 25, 2010, a $58,509,050 firm-fixed-price contract for work consisting of mechanical and hydraulic construction of containment levees requiring deep excavation to minus-70 ft, shoreline protection, and spillbox rehab to increase the capacity of Placement Areas 14 and 15; and maintenance and new work dredging of the Houston Galveston Navigation Channel Bayport to Morgans Point with four options.  Work is to be performed at Harris County, Texas, and Chambers County, Texas, with an estimated completion date of March 31, 2012.  Thirty-four bids were solicited with four bids received.  U.S. Army Engineer District Galveston, Texas, is the contracting activity (W912HY-10-C-0016).
