Wreck of MV Blythe Star Found Off Tasmania

An investigation by Australian research organisation CSIRO’s research vessel RV Investigator has confirmed the location of the wreck of the MV Blythe Star.The 44-metre motor vessel Blythe Star was a coastal freighter that disappeared off Tasmania nearly 50 years ago. The vessel was travelling from Hobart to King Island with a cargo of superphosphate fertiliser and a ton of beer in kegs when, on October 13, 1973, it suddenly capsized and sank off the southwest coast of Tasmania…

Recipitents of Australian Search and Rescue Awards

Five Tasmania Police officers will be recognised for their outstanding contribution to search and rescue tonight at this year’s Australian Search and Rescue Awards in Sydney. Since 1996, the National Search and Rescue Council, which is made up of representatives from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), Australian Defence Force and state and territory police services, has presented the Australian Search and Rescue Award to those who have made a significant contribution to Australia’s search and rescue ability or saving of a human life. The winning officers were involved in the rescue of three fishermen off Tasmania’s south west coast on 3 January 2014 in extreme weather conditions.

Ship Tunnel Plans for Norway's Stormy West Cape

Plans for a huge tunnel for ships if given approval would be the first such tunnel in the world and could become a major tourist attraction. If approved, reports newspaper Aftenposten, the tunnel will be built at Stad in the county of Sogn and Fjordane on Norway’s west coast. The stretch of sea along this northern part of the west coast, and around the West Cape, is notoriously treacherous for ships. The idea of building a tunnel here has been in the development stages since the 1980s.

Welaptega Awarded Rope Inspection in Australia

Welaptega Marine was awarded a contract to inspect the mooring system of the Nganhurra floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility operating in waters off the coast of North West Australia. Welaptega has sent a team of specialist engineers to the facility to conduct a Progressive Inspection program using its Rope Measurement System (RMS) and 3D-modeling system (3DM). “Our Progressive inspection philosophy is a guided examination of mooring systems that focuses on known problems and failure modes,” says Tony Hall, President and CEO of Welaptega Marine. Nganhurra FPSO is operated by Woodside Energy Ltd., and is the first oil production facility in the deep waters off the North West Cape.

From the Navy News Service:   1814 - A British squadron captures U.S. gunboats in Battle of Lake Borgne, La. 1944 - The rank of fleet admiral (five star admiral) is established. 1945 - Capt. Sue S. Dauser receives the first Distinguished Service Medal awarded to a nurse. 1965 - The Navy announces completion of 1,272-ft. radio tower at North West Cape, Australia. Kosmos Energy Update on Drilling Cedrela-1 Exploration Well

Kosmos Energy KOS 0.00% today provided an update on the company's drilling of the Cedrela-1 exploration well offshore the Republic of Ghana. The "Transocean Marianas" semi-submersible drilling rig, under contract to another operator in Ghana, was expected to arrive at the Cedrela-1 well location on the West Cape Three Points Block on or about July 10 to commence drilling Kosmos' Cedrela-1 well near the block's southern boundary. The rig was rendered temporarily inoperable following a reported anchor-handling incident on the Offshore Cape Three Points Block, which is east of the Kosmos-operated West Cape Three Points Block. The incident occurred while preparations were being made to move the rig from the other operator's block to the Cedrela-1 well location.
