QFC Orders 79-meter Freezer Trawler

Norwegian naval architecture firm Skipsteknisk announced it has secured a design contract from fishing company Qikiqtaaluk Fisheries Corporation (QFC) operating out of Iqaluit on Baffin Island in Canada for itsnew state-of-the-art freezer trawler.The new multi-species factory freezer trawler Saputi II will have a carrying capacity of 800 tons of shrimps or 1,200 tons of turbot. The vessel is of ST-118 design and will have a length of 79 meters and a beam of 17 meters.The trawler will be built with heavy ice-class and designed for operation in severe climatic conditions in the Bay of Baffin…

CG Cutter Robert Ward Commissioned

The Coast Guard commissioned a new, California-based 154-foot Fast Response Cutter in San Francisco, Saturday, March 2, 2019.The Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward is the second of four Sentinel-Class Fast Response Cutters (FRC) to be homeported at Coast Guard Base Los Angeles-Long Beach.While these ships will be based in Southern California, they will operate throughout the 11th Coast Guard District, which includes all of California and international waters off of Mexico and Central America.“This cutter is specifically designed to face today’s threats in the maritime domain,” said Rear Adm.

Greenland Builds New Research Vessel

Greenland has an intense interest in maritime research and survey for the near coastal waters, thanks in part to a growing seafood sector, an extensive coastline and some 250 different species of fish. To meet the nation’s emerging need, Greenland had a fine 32.3-meter research vessel built at the Karstensen’s Shipyard in Skagen, Denmark. The vessel was named  R/V Sanna by Helle Siegstad, Head of the Department of Fish and Shellfish, in a ceremony at Nuuk, Greenland in April of 2012.

UK firm Analox Sensor Technology Ltd. (AST) is backing an expedition which aims to produce previously unseen footage of submarine Polar Regions: 'Under the Pole Part II – Discover Greenland' has been inspired by explorer and diver Jacques Cousteau. AST say that a small team of divers/explorers, supplied with the company's vital safety equipment, has now embarked on a journey which will see them spending 22 months crossing the Polar region. In the first 20 days, the team reached Torshavn in the Faroe Islands…
