New research has revealed the highest levels of microplastic yet recorded on the seafloor, with up to 1.9 million pieces in an area of just one square metre.Published this week in the journal Science, this study shows how deep-sea currents act as conveyor belts, transporting tiny plastic fragments and fibers across the seafloor. These currents can concentrate microplastics within huge sediment accumulations, which the authors of the research term ‘microplastic hotspots’. These…

French maritime engineering specialist Iroise Mer used a 50 ton Straightpoint Radiolink plus (RLP) load cell during a refit of a tanker mooring system located 500m off the Corsica coast, recently. Iroise Mer's job was to update the site, comprising four different mooring lines, complete with anchors, chains and concrete deadweights, and all existing components had to be removed and new ones installed. 3 Die As Ship Carrying Marble Sinks Off Italy

A cargo ship carrying 150 tons of marble sank off the Italian coast on Friday killing three people and leaving another missing, Reuters reported. The Nautika 64 capsized about 64 km (40 miles) from the Adriatic port of Ancona when its cargo shifted. Port authorities said they received a "May Day" call for help at 7:45 a.m. (0645 GMT) and sent boats and a helicopter to the ship, which was sailing under the Croatian flag. "The May Day was sent by one of the crew who, after finding he couldn't send it from the ship, swam to an oil platform nearby," they said. Bad weather in the Mediterranean caused problems on the west coast of Italy. A containership ran aground in high seas and heavy winds near the southwestern town of Gioia Tauro.
