Navy Discovers Malaysian Tanker

Indonesia's navy has found a tanker carrying almost US$400,000 worth of diesel that was taken by its own crew last week due to a commercial dispute, says a report in AFP. The navy said in a statement that the MT Vier Harmoni with 10 Indonesian crewmen was found off West Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo. There was a dispute between the charterer of the vessel and the crew when a promise of bonus payments was unfulfilled, said Vier Abdul Jamal, chief executive of the ship's owner Vierlines Asia Group. "The ship was escorted to the port of Tanjung Pinang for further investigation," said Head of Information Department of the Navy Rear Admiral Edi Sucipto. According to Edi, the search for Vier Harmoni commenced soon after a report that the tanker was taken to Batam waters.

Piracy Drops to 21-year low - IMB

Piracy and armed robbery at sea has fallen to its lowest levels since 1995, despite a surge in kidnappings off West Africa, according to a new report from the International Chamber of Commerce’s International Maritime Bureau (IMB). IMB’s global piracy report shows 98 incidents in the first half of 2016, compared with 134 for the same period in 2015. When piracy was at its highest, in 2010 and 2003, IMB recorded 445 attacks a year. In the first half of 2016, IMB recorded 72 vessels boarded, five hijackings, and a further 12 attempted attacks. Nine ships were fired upon. Sixty-four crew were taken hostage onboard, down from 250 in the same period last year. “This drop in world piracy is encouraging news.

Indonesia to Sink 30 Illegal Fishing Boats

Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti has said Jakarta was ready to sink 30 foreign-flagged vessels caught fishing illegally in Indonesian waters, following a schedule being arranged by the authorities, says the Straits Times. "Indonesia will not compromise with, and will be very tough in taking action against and in arresting foreign vessels caught fishing illegally in Indonesian waters. The violation committed by the 30 vessels is illegal fishing," she said. Susi also revealed that the Indonesian Navy's Western Fleet had arrested three Vietnamese-flagged vessels for illegal fishing in Indonesian territory, in the latest incident of its kind.

Indonesia Sinks Boats from China

According to The China People's Daily, Indonesia has just sank a large Chinese vessel and 40 other foreign ships caught fishing in The South China Sea. The Jakarta Post cited Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti as saying that the Gui Xei Yu 12661, a steel-made, 300-gross-ton boat, was sunk on Wednesday in Pontianak, West Kalimantan after it was detonated by the ministry with an explosive device planted on it. AP confirms that Indonesian authorities blew up and sank the 41 foreign fishing vessels as a warning against poaching in the country's waters. The 300 gross tonne Chinese vessel was destroyed with a low-explosive device on its hull in West Kalimantan, said Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti.

Pirates Attack Oil Tanker near Indonesia

Pirates attacked A Malaysian-registered oil tanker off the coast of West Kalimantan (Indonesia) and robbed its crew of valuables on Thursday night. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) district operations director Commander Shahref Steve Mac Queen Abdullah said the tanker, MT Dongfang, was travelling from Port Dickson to Labuan when the incident happened around 8.30pm in Indonesian waters. "The ship's 17 member crews were not harmed during the incident," said Kuching district operations director Commander Steve MacQueen Abdullah. “The MMEA was informed by the International Maritime Bureau about the robbery, which occurred about 52 nautical miles north of Pulau Uwi in Indonesia. Eni CEO Discusses Projects with Indonesian Prime Minister

The Indonesian Minister of Energy, Jero Wacik, and Eni’s CEO, Paolo Scaroni, met today in Jakarta to discuss Eni’s activities in the country. During the meeting, Paolo Scaroni updated the Minister of Energy on the progress of ongoing projects, which are considered strategic for both Eni and the Indonesian Republic. In particular, Paolo Scaroni has illustrated the importance of the project Jangkrik Complex, operated by Eni and located in the East Kalimantan deep waters, where production is expected to start less than seven years after the discovery.
