On February 13, the two new RAstar 3200 escort tugs SST Grizzly and SST Orca for SAAM SMIT TOWAGE CANADA Inc. (SST Canada) were the toasts of a blessing ceremony in Vancouver Harbor.Designed by Robert Allan Ltd and built at Cheoy Lee Shipyards, these two significant additions to the SST Canada fleet were showcased to guests aboard the luxury harbor cruising vessel Pacific Yacht. Executive claims 'Carnival Triumph', 'Carnival Splendor' & even 'Costa Condordia' are but the "Tip of the Iceberg". World City America Inc., president, Stephanie Gallagher asks when will U.S. politicians and reporters ask the right questions about this non-U.S. industry? American passengers account for over 90 percent of the revenues earned by over 150 foreign-flag cruise ships sailing out of U.S. ports. It's a $40 billion-a-year industry that competes unfairly with American hotels, resorts, casinos and convention facilities. "Unfairly" because it is exempt from U.S. safety, environmental and labor regulations. It does not pay U.S. corporate taxes on its profits, and it is not required to hire American officers or crew.

World Ocean Schoolship for Savannah Stay

The  Roseway, one of the tall ships that visited Savannah recently as part of the Tall Ships Challenge, has chosen the city  as a permanent port of call. Roseway is part of the  World Ocean School, which in conjunction with The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, Wednesday announced its new home at The Westin Savannah Harbor Marina. Roseway will maintain her winter and summer ports in St. Croix and Boston, and will dock in Savannah for approximately six weeks in the transition periods which occur twice a year.

Corvus Energy, harnessing the power of large format lithium-ion battery systems for marine propulsion, will spotlight its proprietary technology at the International Tug & Salvage (ITS 2010) Conference May 17-21 at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver, B.C. Expanded Trade Show Planned for Mari-Tech 2001

Planning has begun for Mari-Tech 2001, scheduled to be held June 20 - 22, 2001, at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC, under the sponsorship of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering, (CIMarE), Vancouver Branch. The size of the newly redeveloped Bayshore will allow the trade show to grow, and a floating boat show will run concurrently with other events, showcasing vessels that reflect the subject matter of the Technical Paper program. The theme of the conference, Marine Challenges in the New Millennium, will be broken down into four sub-themes: High Speed Vessels, Megayacht Design and Construction , Trends in Commercial, Naval and Docking Tug Design, Marine Maintenance and Operational Challenges.

Zabrocky to Headline WISTA

Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) USA announced that Lois K. Zabrocky of Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. (OSG) will be the keynote speaker at its 2nd Annual Luncheon in Stamford, CT. The luncheon is being held in conjunction with this year’s Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) Shipping 2007 Conference. The luncheon will be held on Monday, March 19 at the Westin Stamford Hotel. Lois K. Zabrocky was appointed head of OSG’s International Product Carrier Strategic Business Unit in September 2005. In this role she oversees the company’s international product carrier business which includes Panamax and Handysize tankers that transport petroleum products.

Jensen Named CMA Commodore

Torben G. Jensen, Chairman & CEO of The Clipper Group, has been named this week as the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) Commodore for the year 2006. Jensen follows a succession of maritime industry leaders as Commodore. The Award will be presented to Mr. Jensen on March 22. The Award is given each year to a person in the international maritime industry who has contributed to the growth and development of the industry. Jensen who is currently the Chairman & CEO of The Clipper Group has had a distinguished career in the maritime industry, with over 45 years experience. Jensen started his career in shipping in 1959 as a trainee in his native country of Denmark. In 1972 he and an ex-colleague set-up Armada Shipping Aps., Denmark.

Shipping 2003: Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow

Bringing together a diverse group of individuals within the maritime industry, the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA), plans to host its annual Trade Show and Conference from March 17-19, 2003 at the Westin Stamford Hotel in Stamford, Conn.
