CSA Recognizes Safety in Shipping Industry
The U.S. maritime industry publicly recognized the women and men responsible for safe ship operations at the Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held at the Loews New Orleans Hotel on June 2, 2011. Over 180 people, representing over 70 companies, attended the annual industry-sponsored event. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the results of the 2010 Jones F. Devlin Awards. Those awards were given to vessels that have operated for at least two years without a seafarer involved in a lost-time injury.
RoRo Carrier Fires Warning Shots
MANAMA, Bahrain - While transiting north in international waters in the Central Arabian Gulf April 24 at approximately 8 a.m. local time, Motor Vessel Westward Venture was approached by two unidentified small boats. Following proper procedure, Westward Venture issued standard queries to the small boats via bridge-to-bridge radio, but received no response. Westward Venture then activated a flare, which also did not receive a response. The small boats continued toward Westward Venture and the ship's embarked security team fired warning shots. The small boats left the area. A short time later, Westward Venture received a query from a unit identifying itself as Iranian Coast Guard. It is not clear if this was one of the small boats or a separate boat. The query was routine and correct.
TOTE Vessel to Assist Troops
Upon the request of the Commander of the Military Sealift Command, Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE), will lend the assistance of the S. S. Northern Lights to transport military hardware to Southwest Asia. The ship departed Tacoma, Washington Sunday, February 9, and will arrive in San Diego to be loaded with military cargo mid week. An Alaska corporation founded in 1975, TOTE maintains three Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) cargo trailer ships for the Puget Sound-Anchorage trade. Typically the S. S. Northern Lights and her sister ships, the S. S. Westward Venture and S. S. Great Land, are engaged in transporting vehicles, trailers, construction equipment, and other merchandise from the Port of Tacoma, Washington to the Port of Anchorage, Alaska.
