Canadian Coast Guard Opts for Thordon Bearings
CCGS Terry Fox, one the largest icebreakers in the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) fleet, has returned to service with new Thordon propeller shaft bearings after concluding that fitting laminate phenolic bearings would extend drydock time and costs.The 88-meter-long vessel, built in the 1980s, had been operating Thordon’s water lubricated elastomeric polymer bearings on both shafts for 24 years. Canadian Coast Guard Fleet Modernization Underway
ABB said it will modernize 10 out of 14 Medium Icebreakers and High Endurance Multi Task Canadian Coast Guard ships to extend operational life of the vessels by another 20 years. “For more than 75 years ABB has been working at the cutting edge of icebreaker technology and we are delighted to bring this expertise to these Canadian Coast Guard ships,” said Jyri Jusslin, Senior Vice President of ABB Global Marine & Ports Service. Design and work supply on first of the 10 vessels, CCGS Pierre Radisson, is already underway and will be completed in July 2017. CCG Ship Returns After Completing Katrina Assistance
Fisheries and Oceans Canada issued stated that the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Sir William Alexander returned to its homeport of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia following completion of its mission to the Gulf coast of the United States to assist in recovery from Hurricane Katrina.
