Ferry Co. Charged with Dumping Sewage

A company based in Marblehead was charged on Jan. 7 in federal court with dumping sewage into North Shore waters from a popular ferry it operates out of Salem. United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Rear Admiral J. L. Nimmich, United States Coast Guard, Commander, First Coast Guard District and William Schenkelberg, Special Agent in Charge of the Northeast Region of the Coast Guard Investigative Service, announced today that The Rockmore Company, Inc. was charged in a Criminal Information with two violations of the Rivers and Harbors Act arising out of its practice of dumping human waste into local waters. The Information alleges that, from 1990 to 2006, the company has operated a 59-ft long passenger vessel named the P/V Hannah Glover based in Salem.

Tugboat Mate Convicted

A Jacksonville, Florida man pleaded guilty in federal court to violating the Clean Water Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan; Thomas V. Man Sentenced in Vessel Scuttling Case

Agent in Charge of the Northeast Region of the U.S. Investigative Service, announced that THOMAS W. 47, of 121 Wheeler Street, Gloucester, was sentenced by U.S. violating the Refuse Act. the coast of Gloucester in approximately one hundred feet of water. pumped water into it using a bilge pump until it sank stern first. the expense. fishermen, thereby creating a navigational hazard. recommendation in the plea agreement filed in the case. serving one year of probation, LUKEGORD will pay a fine of $2,000. sinking. which equals the cost to the Coast Guard in responding to the sinking. newspapers of the two largest fishing ports in the region.

Chief Engineer Sentenced to Prison Term, Reports U.S. Attorney

The Chief Engineer of a Panamanian registered container ship was sentenced today in federal court to charges of conspiracy, obstruction, destruction of evidence, false statements and violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships in connection with the use of a secretly concealed "magic pipe" used to deliberately discharge tons of sludge and oil contaminated waste overboard.
