For Ship Recycling, Grieg (Goes) Green

A vessel placed in dry-dock in preparation for recycling. Photo credit: Grieg Green.

In May 2014 National Geographic wrote an in-depth article on shipbreaking operations in Bangladesh where they listed shipbreaking as one of the deadliest professions in the world. The images from these shipyards are well circulated among professionals in the shipping industry. Individuals without personal protective equipment cutting and grinding into a ship that was haphazardly beached and torn asunder by unskilled laborers. Pollution swirl in the nearby tidal area and soot belches into the air. Large sections of ships come careening off endless rows of vessels that litter the beach.

SHORTSEA CRANE OPERATIONS: Lifting a Port to Prosperity

A Liebherr LHM 420 Crane is at the heart of a rapidly expanding shortsea shipping success story. Reliability is the key for a port that’s turned the corner, with nowhere to go but ‘up.’Way back in January of 1996, I moved to Richmond, Virginia from Houston, Texas. Still very much in the maritime business as a cargo surveyor and ship expeditor, the Port of Richmond intrigued me, every time I drove past it on I-95. Eventually, I got a tour of the struggling port, courtesy of then port director and retired USCG Captain Marty Moynihan. Moynihan, an energetic executive, was keen to expand the port’s horizons.Back then, as much as half of the port’s meager business was tobacco shipping to and from Philip Morris, just across the street.

Europe Prefers Polluting Yards Abroad, Though It can Handle Ship Recycling

Ship recycling yards approved by the EU will have enough capacity to handle demand from EU-flagged ships that need to be scrapped, a statement from NGO Shipbreaking Platform said qoting a new data analysis. The shipping industry wants low-cost ship ‘breaking’ yards outside the EU – with dangerous working conditions and poor environmental standards – to be added to the EU list of approved facilities in order to meet demand from vessels bound by the bloc’s ship recycling law, which enters force on 1 January 2019.But the current EU list can accommodate the numbers and sizes of EU-flagged ships that are scrapped every year, the new report…

USCG Warns of Unsafe Ice

The Coast Guard is urging people to use extreme caution when venturing onto the ice across Lake Superior, St. Marys River, and the northern parts of lakes Michigan and Huron with the forecasted rain and snow predicted this weekend. The snow-covered ice will give a false appearance that the ice is safe. Ice is unpredictable and the thickness can vary, even in small areas. Water currents, particularly around narrow spots, bridges, inlets and outlets, are always suspect for thin ice. Stay away from cracks, seams, pressure ridges, slushy areas and darker areas since these signify thinner ice. Obstructions such as rocks, logs, vegetation and pilings affect the strength of ice. Heat from these obstructions slows ice formation.

USCG Warns Against Ice Dangers On Lake Champlain

Coast Guard crews at Station Burlington, Vermont, are urging Lake Champlain locals and visitors to use extreme caution on the lake and surrounding waters this weekend. With more snow forecasted, unsafe ice may be hidden from view and poses greater danger than normal as the added weight of the snow decreases density of the ice. "The thing folks need to recognize is that while beautiful and enjoyable, ice is also deadly - especially when conditions like these exist," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Knight, officer of the day at Coast Guard Station Burlington. Remember ICE: Information, Clothing, and Equipment. People are encouraged to research information about the weather conditions, wear appropriate clothing, and never go out onto the ice without proper safety equipment.

Devil's Blanket Responsible for Increasing Ice Rescues

Rescues in Saginaw Bay, Michigan, Sunday evening and Lake Erie Monday morning are the latest in an alarmingly high number of Great Lakes ice rescues since Saturday, prompting a Coast Guard reminder of the risk of venturing out onto the ice and of the importance of taking appropriate safety precautions. The names and hometowns of the rescued and assisted are not being released. At about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, a 911 operator contacted search-and-rescue controllers at the Coast Guard Sector Detroit Command Center to report a disoriented man on Saginaw Bay in blizzard conditions. The man called 911 from his cell phone, allowing the dispatchers to determine his coordinates before losing communication with him.

Ferry Capsizing Kills at Least 129 in Congo

At least 129 people are dead in the Democratic Republic of Congo after an overcrowded vessel sank on Lake Tanganyika in the early hours of Friday morning.   According to Laurent Kahozi Sumba, the transport minister for Katanga province, 129 bodies have been recovered and there are 232 known survivors – though the true death toll is unknown, AP reported.   Kahozi said an investigation into the cause of the sinking is underway. MarPro INTERVIEW: USCG Admiral Robert Papp

When Admiral Robert J. Papp assumed the duties of the 24th Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard on May 25, 2010, he also served notice that it won’t be business as usual at headquarters. Papp, unlike his three immediate predecessors, apparently has no intention of setting the world on fire by instituting sweeping changes. Inside the Coast Guard, the proverbial round turn is probably good news. For maritime businesses that trudge along under the collective weight of mounting regulatory burdens, an arguably willing partner now resides in the C-suite. From Papp’s perspective, the overarching link for all of the Coast Guard’s collective missions is the maritime aspect of their service.

Proposed Shipbuilding Centers of Excellence

Davie Yards Inc. (TSX:DAV) introduced its proposal for the implementation of a National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy aimed at renewing the federal fleet and building world-class shipbuilding capability in Canada, while providing more predictable work for the maritime industry. "Davie's proposal is based on our belief that Canadian yards can achieve a competitive position vis-à-vis European yards in building complex ships. In order to create such competitiveness, we are proposing that major federal shipbuilding projects be allocated to a select number of yards that will develop expertise and thus make it possible to secure the right costs and prices for the fleet renewal program," explained Steinar Kulen, President and Chief Executive Officer at Davie.

Rodriguez: Small Yard Can Do

Joey Rodriguez was visiting one of the Gulf Coasts major shipyards recently. To which the CEO responded, “And I am intimidated by what you are able to build without all this equipment and space.”This exchange sums up the respect that Rodriguez has earned over the years for the quantity and quality of vessels that he has been able to build and deliver from his small yard in Bayou LaBatre, The key to his success is the ability that he and his crew have of making do and careful on-site planning. Years ago Rodriguez had someone come in and teach him how to use a computer-assisted design program with which he has designed numerous vessels as well as doing the engineering design work on many others.

Column: Maritime Security Regulations Published

On July 1, 2003 the Coast Guard published in the Federal Register the long anticipated regulations concerning maritime port and vessel security. This is a major rulemaking printed in seven separate individual rulemakings. These rulemakings concern compliance with provisions of the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA) and implementation of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The regulations incorporate the ISPS Code into the domestic maritime trade. The ISPS Code applies to all port facilities and vessels (MODUs, cargo & passenger vessels subject to SOLAS) in international trade. Any vessel not on the above list must still comply with the new security provisions of 33 CFR Parts 101 and 103.
