Uber is taking to the water in London. Earlier this month the international ride-hailing company marked the start of a partnership with water taxi operator Thames Clippers to provide its services on the River Thames.The first vessel donning Uber Boat by Thames Clippers branding set sail on August 3 as part of a fleet of 20 passenger vessels departing from 23 piers across London from Putney in the west to Woolwich Royal Arsenal in the east.Uber is rolling out the service on its app…

Sydney has its Harbour Ferries, Hong Kong its Star Ferries and New York the instantly recognizable Staten Island Ferries. Add to that list London, for increasingly the fleet of MBNA Thames Clippers is becoming as identifiable with the British capital as its famous red double decker buses. Wight Shipyard Company has delivered to MBNA Thames Clippers the latest, most technically advanced and energy efficient fast ferries in the expanding London fleet; the 35 meter low wash catamarans Mercury Clipper and Jupiter Clipper.

On December 14, 2012, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), erected the composite deckhouse for Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the U.S. Navy’s next generation destroyer, and in the process achieved two new milestones in the company’s 128-year history:  a 900-ton, four-crane, static lift of the deckhouse module for DDG 1000, and a record-breaking movement of the ship and deckhouse on the shipyard’s Land Level Transfer Facility, the total combined weight of which exceeded 13,000 tons.

UK marine contractor Briggs Marine wins 7-year contract worth over £50 million with Transport for London (TfL) to operate cross-Thames ferry. The contract will see Briggs Marine undertake operation and maintenance of the Woolwich Ferry service from 1st April 2013. Working with London River Services Limited (LRS), a subsidiary of TfL, Briggs Marine will be responsible for daily operation of the ferry service, which links Woolwich and North Woolwich and the north and south circular roads across the River Thames.

The Port of London Authority and John Deere worked together to keep London’s river Thames safe during the Olympics. Thousands of spectators made their way along Putney Bridge, basking in the sunshine and soaking up the atmosphere. With the 2012 Olympics in London this summer, following on the heels of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee pageant, the city had never been so vibrant. London. 3,000 tubes, 1,500 double-decker busses, the Eurostar, the Javelin shuttle and several ferries on the Thames all have two things in common: they are all fitted with Voith technology and will ensure that millions of spectators and over 10,000 athletes get safely and soundly where they want to go during the Olympic Games. Voith drive technology as well as various technical services for numerous busses and trains will make a key contribution to smoothly running traffic systems operating around the Olympic Games over the next few weeks.

The coastal tanker industry has been one of MMS Shiprepair’s (Hull) largest contributors during recent weeks, ships including Everard’s 3,778 dwt Asperity, and 3,778 dwt Audacity. The offshore industry has also been a contributor - the 3,115 dwt Safe Truck, this is owned by Sea Truck Ltd, Sutton UK and the 1,336 dwt Toisa Crest, owned by Toisa Ltd, in Hamilton. Also recently at the yard is the 1,308 dwt salvage tug Anglian Monarch this vessel is owned by Klyne Marine Services Ltd, Lowestoft and two dredgers - the 5,872 dwt Arco Beck, owned by Hanson Civil & Marine Ltd, Southampton and the 197 grt Sea Horse, which is owned by Crowley Marine Services Inc, Seattle. Recent projects have involved the 1,370 dwt Trobo, which is owned by Paul Wilson & Co.
