Answering the Call for Environmental Answers

The Coast Guard has developed two separate mitigation system prototypes specifically designed for inland and offshore environments and tested them in the Kalamazoo River and Lake Huron.Whenever there is a need for oil, there will always be a risk of oil spills. This is no less true for bituminous sands, commonly known as oil sands or tar sands. Oil sands are mostly found in Alberta, Canada, and comprised of bitumen, sand, clay and water. They are typically viscous, with a texture similar to peanut butter.

Daly Joins Sea Machines as COO

Boston-based smart ship technology company Sea Machines Robotics has hired Jim Daly as Chief Operating Officer. Daly was previously Chief Operating Officer and an early member of the leadership team at Rethink Robotics, where he scaled operations from technology concept through first and second-generation products. He most recently led the Sawyer robot product development project from conception through design, launch and global customer deployment. He held earlier senior leadership roles at startups Zeemote, Tea Forte and Handspring, and as a Division Manager at Solectron Corporation. Daly earned a BS from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from Santa Clara University. He serves on the Advisory Board for Robotics Engineering at WPI. Michael G.

ABB Names Jouret Chief Digital Officer

ABB has appointed Guido Jouret as Chief Digital Officer, reporting to ABB’s CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer, effective October 1, 2016. Jouret, a pioneer of the Internet of Things, will lead the next level of development and deployment of ABB’s digital solutions for customers globally and across all businesses. Jouret is a citizen of both the United States and Belgium, with long experience in Silicon Valley. He served for 20 years at Cisco after obtaining a PhD in Computer Science. His most recent role at Cisco was as General Manager of the Internet of Things division, which aims to connect billions of devices to the internet across a wide range of industries.

General Dynamics Announces Exec Appointments

General Dynamics announced that David K. Heebner, president of General Dynamics Land Systems, will succeed Michael W. Toner as executive vice president and group executive for the corporation's Marine Systems group when Toner retires on December 31, 2008. Mark C. Roualet, senior vice president and chief operating officer of General Dynamics Land Systems, will succeed Heebner on October 15, at which time Heebner will transfer to the corporation's headquarters for a transitional period. Heebner, 63, has been president of General Dynamics Land Systems since July 1, 2005. Previously he had been senior vice president - planning and development for General Dynamics, since March 2002. He had been vice president of strategic planning for General Dynamics since January 2000.

Markunas and Hays Join Woods Hole Group

Peter Markunas of Eastham and Beth Hays of Brewster have joined the Woods Hole Group as Coastal Engineer and Environmental Permitting Specialist, respectively. Markunas brings over 35 years of experience in engineering and environmental design, planning, and construction. For the past twenty years, Markunas has been a presence in New England, with specific focus on the lower Cape Cod region of Massachusetts. He has been heavily involved in the protection of shoreline properties, marina design and dredging of piers, boathouses, and boat ramps for municipalities and private interests.
