Keeping Plastics Out of the Ocean: New AMELS Drinking Water Systems

Inspired by yacht owners and crews and to coincide with World Environment Day, AMELS announced that it is designing drinking water purification systems into all new AMELS Limited Editions yacht projects. These systems can tackle the global plastic waste problem, while providing pleasant-tasting and safe drinking water. The new drinking water system is a great way to reduce the plastic footprint of yacht ownership.The AMELS yard has now designed remineralization and purification systems into its new Limited Editions yachts, to give crews and guests access to carbonated or chilled water – made by the yacht itself – wherever in the world they are. Remo Mayer, build captain of the 242 New Secret Yacht, said, “On NEW SECRET we came up with a system so we can drink our own tap water.

Earth Day: Canada to Protect Ocean

Plastic waste and marine litter pose an increasingly serious threat to our oceans and marine life. Canada is committed to protecting our environment and preserving our waterways, so that all Canadians can continue to enjoy the beauty, health and economic benefits that our oceans, lakes and rivers provide. The Government of Canada is working at home and with international partners to address this serious and growing problem. As Canadians celebrate Earth Day, Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, launched Canada's Dialogue on Plastic Waste to gather Canadians' views on plastics and identify ways we can achieve zero plastic waste and reduce marine litter.

Rosneft Recognized Leader In Contribution To Environmental Protection

Rosneft won international public award The Tree of Ecology in the category of ‘Company leader in contribution to environmental protection measures’ during the celebration of world environment day, the Ecologist Day, and a 10th anniversary of Federal Service for Supervision of Nature Resources in Grand Kremlin Palace. The event organized by Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage and Environment Protection Fund ‘Nature’ brought together officials, members of Russian Academy of Sciences, leaders of environmental non-governmental organizations. In the 2009-2014 timeframe, cumulative costs of Rosneft on environmental protection measures amounted to 125 billion rubles.

CMA CGM Reducing Fleet CO2 Emissions

The CMA CGM Group confirms its objective to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by the end of 2015 (compared to 2005). On the occasion of the June 5 World Environment Day, the CMA CGM Group, the world’s third largest container shipping company and number one in France, confirmed its objective set at 50% reduction CO2/teu-km between 2005 and 2015. In 2013, the global operated fleet CO2 performance has been improved by 4%, and even 8% for the owned fleet, thus a 40% reduction achieved since 2005.

Environment Day – ABB's Role in Offshore Wind Sector

Over the past three years, ABB’s wind power business has grown on average over 50 percent a year, but historically there have been difficulties associated with wind farms, such as the amount of space they occupy, the importance of their siting (without obstructions such as trees or hills), their noise and the threat to birds and bats. An obvious but only recent solution is to site the wind farm offshore, such as the Borkum-2 wind park, which is situated in the North Sea over 100 kilometers off the coast of Germany.

UN Atlas of the Oceans is Launched

IMO has joined with a host of other United Nations agencies and leading international scientific bodies in developing the first comprehensive real-time tool to assess the state of world's oceans. The Internet-based United Nations Atlas of the Oceans was launched on World Environment Day June 5, 2002 at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in Paris, France. More than 2½ years in development after a decade of planning, the Atlas of the Oceans represents the most ambitious global scientific information collaboration ever on-line and an international consensus-building tool expected to assist negotiations of future marine-related agreements.

Panama Canal Receives ISO 14001

More than 100 people at the Miraflores Locks as Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance awarded upon the Department of Security and Environment's Environmental Division of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) the coveted ISO 14001 certification. Juan Héctor Diaz, director of the Department of Security and Environment, accepted the certification at a ceremony at the Miraflores Locks Visitor's Center. Participants included the Academy for Environmental Education Development (AED), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), Panama Ministry of Health (MINSA), Panama National Environment Authority (ANAM) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
