U.S. Ports Have Highest Demurrage and Detention Charges in the World, Report Shows

Container xChange's latest annual benchmark study of demurrage and detention charges recently showed that the ports in the U.S have the highest demurrage and detention (D&D) charges among the top 60 ports worldwide. Demurrage and detention tariffs have two main purposes: (1) compensating the shipping line for the use of its container and (2) encouraging the merchant to return the container as soon as possible for the shipping line to re-use it and have a fast turnaround. Demurrage is the charge that one pays for the use of the container within the terminal beyond the free time period.

London Eyes Top Maritime Center Slot

London has risen from sixth place overall in 2015 to fifth place this year the world’s top maritime centre in Menon Economics’ Leading Maritime Capitals of the World report for 2017 – despite the uncertainty of Brexit. UK Chamber of Shipping says that none of the other maritime cities in the top five – Singapore, Hamburg, Oslo and Shanghai – have had to deal with such a massive economic spanner being thrown in their works. And still London has strengthened its global standing. London is still putting up a fight against Hamburg, Oslo and Rotterdam to be the leading maritime capital of Europe, although each is strong in its own area. London holds the global top spot in finance and law, and Oslo in maritime technology.

Singapore Ranked World's Top Maritime Capital

Singapore has once again emerged in top place in a ranking Menon’s Leading Maritime Capitals of the World Report (Menon Report) for 2017. The study, by Norwegian consultancy firm Menon Economics, looked at 24 objective indicators and garnered survey responses from more than 250 industry experts across all continents. Singapore was also ranked first in the report's 2015 and 2012 surveys. Singapore was ranked number one in the following three categories: Shipping, Ports and Logistics, and Attractiveness and Competitiveness. The maritime nation also scored impressive results in the remaining two categories: second place in Maritime Technology and fourth place in Finance And Law.

DP World's Plan to Tackle Africa's Infrastructure Gap

A five point plan to help tackle Africa’s infrastructure gap is among the findings of a new DP World report to be unveiled at the Africa Global Business Forum this week. Public private partnerships, domestic bond financing, monitoring the life cycle of infrastructure by maintaining and upgrading existing stock, enhanced trade integration and improved trade facilitation are key points raised in the study “Africa At The Crossroads: Bridging The Infrastructure Gap” produced in association with the Economist Intelligence Unit. Over the past decade, investment in African infrastructure has risen sharply and some notable projects have been completed.

SUNY Maritime Grads Start at Higher Salary: PayScale

What do SUNY Maritime College graduates have that Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and Columbia graduates don’t have? Higher starting annual salaries; that’s what, answers SUNY. In fact, SUNY Maritime College has the highest-earning alumni of any state public college in the nation, according to PayScale, Inc. in its 2014-15 College Salary Report issued last week. What differentiates the PayScale, Inc. report from the other national third-party endorsements, says SUNY, is that it focuses on alumni outcomes. According to the report, SUNY Maritime bachelor's-only graduates report early career median salaries of $62,100 and mid-career median incomes of $121,700. SUNY Maritime Ranked a Top 10 US Public College

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College says it has been ranked sixth in public colleges in the North Region by U.S. News & World Report in the 2015 rankings of the nation’s top colleges and universities, released today by the publisher. The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings place SUNY Maritime among the top 20 colleges overall, and among the select best publicly-funded colleges in the North region. CGA Ranks Among Top Colleges in the US

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy continues to be recognized as one of the best institutions for undergraduate education in the nation. According to the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2015 publication rankings, the Academy is listed as No. 1 in the "Regional Colleges North" category. In the "Best in Undergraduate Engineering Programs" category, the institution placed No. 12 in the annual publication known as one of the oldest and best-known rankings of academic institutions. USMMA Moves Up College Rankings

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is America’s second best public regional college in the North and third best regional college according to the 2014 U.S. News and World Report rankings. USMMA has moved up the rankings from last year for undergraduate engineering programs in America, and is now ranked the 22nd best. “Our vision for the Academy is to be the world leader in maritime education,” said Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D., superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The U. S. Merchant Marine Academy was the first federal service academy to admit women in 1974. The minority percentage of midshipmen has steadily risen each year. The Class of 2017 is 23 percent minority, compared with 14.4 percent in the Class of 2013.

A woman took command of a U.S. military service academy for the first time in history when Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz took over as the superintendant of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., Friday, June 3. “We are extremely proud to be the first service with a woman at the helm of our academy,” said U.S. Coast Guard commandant, Adm. Robert J. Papp. Stosz takes over as the school continues to see an increase in minority admissions, growing from 12 percent in 2008 to 24 percent in 2010.

USCG: First Woman Superintendent of Military Service Academy

The Coast Guard will have the first woman superintendent of a military service academy at the helm of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy when classes convene next summer. The commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Bob Papp, has selected Rear Adm. Sandra L. Stosz, Coast Guard director of reserve and leadership, for the superintendent position. “Rear Adm. Stosz has dedicated her career to developing professional Coast Guard men and women,” said U.S. Coast Guard commandant, Adm. Robert J. Papp. “We are also extremely proud to be the first service with a woman at the helm of our academy. In her current position, Stosz is responsible for policy affecting the recruitment and training of more than 8,000 Coast Guard reserve members.

Cummings Congratulates Coast Guard Academy

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, congratulated the United States Coast Guard Academy at New London, Conn., for being named one of the top institutions of higher learning by U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review and Forbes Magazine. The Coast Guard Academy was awarded first place in the Baccalaureate Colleges (North) category in the 2011 edition of U.S. News and World Report's Best Colleges issue. The Academy earned a perfect overall score of 100, the highest among more than 300 colleges which were ranked. The news comes only weeks after Cummings recognized the Academy for their improvement in diversity efforts. The Class of 2014 reported for training on June 28.

Maine Maritime Named Top 50 Engineering College

Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) has been listed in the rankings of the nation’s top baccalaureate colleges for the northern region in the 2011 edition of “Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report. The college was also ranked among the nation’s top 50 engineering colleges in the category of “Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.” Based solely on a survey of engineering deans and senior faculty conducted during the spring of 2010, Maine Maritime Academy was ranked 42nd in the undergraduate engineering category. Maine Maritime Academy was ranked for the fourth consecutive year in the section titled, “Best Baccalaureate Colleges (By Region)”.
