WR Launches On-stack Scrubber Emission Monitor

WR Systems (WR), the U.S.-based maritime technology company, is launching a new variant of its laser-based-emissions monitor at the SMM 2014 Fair in Hamburg. Called the Emsys-iS, the new system is designed specifically for scrubber applications and is targeted at both scrubber manufacturers and shipowners. Simon Brown, WR’s International Business Director, explained the reasons for the new product: “Our standard Emsys extractive unit was just too over-specified for the application. Scrubbers just need monitoring of SO2 and CO2, so all our other gases and PM features were not required.

WR Contracted for CDSADN Services

WR Systems, Ltd. of Norfolk, Va. has been awarded a delivery order on the SeaPort-e contract with NSWC, Dahlgren Division for support services to Combat Direction Systems Activity, Dam Neck (CDSADN) Rapid Response Engineering Capability in the areas of software, hardware, network engineering and technical services. WR will provide support services in the development and refinement of prototype and test articles and provide services required to document and support these products, related subsystems and components. This contract is the follow-on to WR’s Prime contract for Common Mobility Services (CMS) with CDSADN that was awarded in 2007.

Mr. Black has over 30 years of experience in federal and private sector weapon system program management. MHI Orders Emsys for AIDA Cruise New Builds

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) of Nagasaki, Japan has ordered Emsys advanced laser emissions monitoring equipment from WR Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems) for two new-build vessels in construction for Carnival cruise line’s AIDA Cruise brand. The two 125,000-ton passenger vessels, which are the largest ever constructed for AIDA Cruises, feature many innovations that will set higher standards in vessel environmental performance. The Emsys continuous emissions monitoring system has a unique laser-based emissions sensor, allowing high accuracy measurement for up to 10 exhaust stacks.

W R Systems, Ltd., was awarded a follow-on Contract Award N65236-12-D-4806 for SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic. W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems), of Norfolk, VA, along with URS Federal Services, Inc. (prime) and other team members, has been awarded the Submarine C5I & NC3 Engineering, Technical, and Logistic Support follow-on contract from SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic. Work under this contract includes engineering, technical, analysis and assessment, logistical, life cycle, and program management support for VIRGINIA Class (SSN 774) Non-Propulsion Electronics Systems and Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS) C5I systems and subsystems installed in SSN 21, SSN 688/I, SSBN 726, SSN 774, and SSGN Class Submarines and SUBOPAUTH shore facilities.

WRSystems Names Edwards President and COO

W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems) has announced the appointment of Dave Edwards as President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). Edwards joined the Virginia-based company in 1996; he replaces Founder Raymond Yu, who retired in November 2011. Edwards was the chief architect of the company’s Engineering Services Division (ESD), which now employs more than 200 employees in the Norfolk location. Emsys Selected for 3 Rig Contract

W R Systems, Ltd (WRSystems) have been awarded a contract to supply its  laser-based Emsys Emissions Monitoring System (EMS) to a major offshore drilling contractor for three drilling ships/rigs located in the Gulf of Mexico. The EMS will be incorporated into the vessel’s proprietary data management technology, to provide compliance with each vessel’s EPA Air Permit requirements. WRSystems has been working with the drilling contractor for over a year in preparation for these projects.

Maersk Uses Emsys for Navy Biofuel Trials

W R Systems, Ltd (WRSystems) has been asked to supply its EmsysTM laser‐based Emissions Monitoring System (EMS) for the purpose of emission verification for an ongoing fuel trials on‐board the AP Moller‐Maersk vessel Maersk Kalmar. WRSystems was asked to provide the EmsysTM system installation as part of a wider project between Maersk Line Limited (Maersk) and the US Navy to test biofuels for their long‐term suitability for maritime applications. EmsysTM was requested by Maersk following successful trial installations on two US‐based Maersk container vessels.

W R Systems Navigation & Comms Contract Renewed

W R Systems, Ltd. in Norfolk has been awarded the second option year on its navigation and interior communications contract in support of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic. This modification increases the contract ceiling from $54,462,137.76 to $82,562,920 and extends the period of performance through October 7, 2012. WRSystems has supported SPAWAR Atlantic’s requirements for In-Service Engineering (ISEA) support services for navigation and interior communication systems for the past 15 years.

Maersk Uses Emsys for USN Biofuel Trials

Emsys Monitoring Technology for Emissions Regs

Hefty fines, detention and possible arrest are looming for ship owners/operators who fail to meet new ship emissions requirements. In accordance with MARPOL (Marine Pollution) Annex VI regulations, new Emissions Control Area (ECA) regulations for sea areas within 200 nautical miles from the coasts and ports of the U.S. and Canada go into effect on August 1, 2011. Even with an exemption clause that extends the regulations enforcement date to Aug. 1, 2012, the time window is short for outfitting thousands of vessels.

Bath Iron Works Selects WRSystems

Norfolk, VA: W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems), a systems engineering firm in Norfolk, Virginia, has won a nearly $2 million contract from Bath Iron Works to provide speed log systems and services for U.S. Navy ships. Based in Bath, Maine and a General Dynamics subsidiary, Bath Iron Works is a major American shipyard that manufactures vessels for the military, commercial and private sectors. The company has ordered the speed log systems for the restart of the Arleigh Burke destroyer class, which features new construction hulls.

WRSystems’ Emsys Receives Type Approval

W R Systems Ltd., Norfolk Va. Announced the completion of its Emsys Product Design Assessment (PDA) program with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) by being awarded formal Type Approval on September 1st 2010. The company said Emsys is the world’s first Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) based emissions monitoring system to receive Type Approval for on-board verification of marine diesel engines and Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) in line with the Revised MARPOL Annex VI and the NOx Technical Code (2008). The approvals cover both NOx and SOx emissions and additionally, Particulate Matter (PM). The system was formally launched at the SMM 2010 Exhibition in Hamburg to complete the commercial development phase of the project which commenced in early 2009.

WR Systems Achieves ISO Certification

Norfolk Mayor Paul D. Fraim will recognize WR Systems, Ltd. for Outstanding Achievement on Wednesday, March 4, following the company’s certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). WRSystems has received ISO 9001:2000 certification, a process standard for a quality management system. The ISO is based in Geneva, Switzerland and establishes and approves worldwide proprietary industrial and commercial standards for technical and engineering criteria, methods and practices. To achieve ISO certification a company must go through a rigorous and lengthy process. The certification of WRSystems lasts for three years and will help open doors to both government contracts and the private sector.

Continuous Emissions Monitoring System

A new emissions monitoring system being developed by a Norfolk, Va. systems engineering firm will allow vessels worldwide to continuously monitor pollutants and readily report findings to regulatory agencies and inspectors. The patent-pending Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), developed by W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems), is the first technology integration of its kind. A successful land-based test of the CEMS prototype was performed in August 2009. Stringent new regulations regarding vessel emissions are forthcoming from US and worldwide governments and maritime organizations. WRSystems developed the new technology to help the maritime industry meet these new regulations and reduce their carbon footprint.

CMA CGM: Significant Recovery in Operations

Operating profit for the CMA CGM Group is expected to return to the breakeven point in December 2009, ahead of the company’s cautious forecasts in September 2009. The savings plan applied throughout all segments of the group, combined with increasingly firm volumes and rates, is already producing its initial effects. The recovery of operating profit illustrates the shipping expertise of the CMA CGM teams, which have been entirely focused on achieving this objective. -     Optimized capacity in line with transport demand on all the Group’s lines. Furthermore, by soon extending “super eco speed” to all ships on ocean-going lines, the group will further reduce fuel consumption by the end of the year, thus saving tens of millions of dollars.

WRSystems Wins Navy Contract up to $140M

W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems) has been awarded a $26,946,956 contract from the U.S. Navy to provide engineering technical support services for navigation systems in the U.S. and abroad. Seventy-five percent of the contract work will be performed in Hampton Roads, Va. through WRSystems’ Engineering Services Division in Norfolk, Va. The value of the contract could reach an estimated $140,601,392 if all options are exercised. The company is based in Fairfax, Va. WRSystems expects to hire additional staff to help service the new contract. The contract combines purchases for the Navy (97%), and the governments of Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt under the Foreign Military Sales Program.

WRSystems Provides Navy with Systems Upgrades

W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems) is providing the U.S. Navy with a range of systems technologies and upgrades. Products and services include a depth reporting system developed and produced by WRSystems and the Department of the Navy, which was partially funded through the Secretary of Defenses’ Acquisition Challenge program. The Digital Depth Detection (D3) system is a technology upgrade for an older system, which is becoming increasingly hard to support. WRSystems, a systems engineering firm in Norfolk, Virginia, also is producing speed indicator transmitter systems and small combatant craft integrated bridge systems for the Navy. In addition to these systems, the firm has recently launched a new commercial maritime green venture, Emsys, a continuous stack emissions monitoring system.
