Gazelle Wind Power Appoints U.S. Wind Finance Pioneer as CFO

Floating platform developer Gazelle Wind Power has appointed clean energy finance industry expert Álvaro Ortega as Chief Financial Officer (CFO).Ortega is the former Vice President of Finance at Avangrid Inc., a publicly traded company on the NY Stock Exchange and the U.S. subsidiary of global energy leader Iberdrola.“Finding someone with a track record like Álvaro’s is rare. Yara Appoints Askeland as New CSO

Shippers to Support Seafarers’ Mental Health Needs

Monday 25th June marked the IMO Day of the Seafarer, which this year has a particular focus on seafarer well-being. In response, members of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations; UK Chamber of Shipping and the Royal Dutch Shipowners Association have each launched webpages signposting seafarers to mental health charities, chaplain services and support networks. The move follows a study of more than 1000 seafarers by Yale University and the Sailor’s Society, where 26 per cent of seafarers said they had felt “down, depressed or hopeless”. In May 2018, the UK Chamber of Shipping and seafarer’s trade unions launched detailed guidance for shipping companies on how to proactively support their seafarer’s mental health.

After Paris, A Move to Rein In Emissions by Ships

As the world moves to slash CO2 emissions, the shipping and aviation sectors have managed to remain on the sidelines. But the pressure is now on these two major polluting industries to start controlling their emissions at last - a report by Yale University. International aviation and shipping emissions were excluded from the Paris pact, which introduced limits on greenhouse gas emissions for all nations starting in 2020. With power generation, manufacturing, domestic transport, deforestation, and even changes in land use all now constrained, calls are growing for these two big sectors to be tamed as well. Aviation and shipping each emit roughly the same volume of CO2 annually as the U.K.

USN Announces 2015 Young Investigators

It's a career-defining moment for 36 college and university faculty April 30, as the Department of the Navy announces the recipients of its 2015 Young Investigator Program, one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country. Collectively, awardees will receive $18.8 million in grants to fund research across a range of naval-relevant science and technology areas. This is a banner year for the program, administered by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), which increased funding by 50 percent over last year. "These recipients demonstrate the type of visionary, multidisciplinary thought that helps the U.S. Navy anticipate and adapt to a dynamic battlespace," said Dr. Larry Schuette, ONR's director of research.

Transpacific Trade Organizational Changes

MOL has announced the following organizational changes which will take effect in August 2013. These changes will further build the MOL organization as one that customers and employees can continue to count on. Calvin Duffaut, assistant vice president, yield management and corporate communications for MOL (America) Inc. has been promoted to vice president, yield management of MOL Liner and will relocate to Hong Kong. Duffaut joined MOL in 2007 after many years of management experience in trade management, pricing and logistics with Pacer Stacktrain Ltd., American President Lines, and Lykes Bros. Steamship Inc. The October 7th Annual Membership Conference for members of American Maritime Safety, Inc., was not officially billed as a 23rd anniversary event. Nevertheless, the story of AMS, an organization established by a group of U.S. based vessel owners and operators, is worthy of special mention. Indeed, this New York based Maritime Consortium has rapidly expanded in scope since its founding in 1988. From humble beginnings in New York, AMS has grown to over 400 vessel owners and operators and is now recognized as the leading industry association on regulatory compliance in the U.S.

NOAA Buoys Deployed in the Arctic

Now traversing the Northwest Passage, the Ocean Watch crew - four professional sailors, a scientist and an educator - recently completed the deployment of three NOAA Global Drifter Program buoys. Ports America Appoints Khan

Ports America has appointed Nasir Khan as its new chief development officer who will be responsible for leading the company’s future investments and expansion in marine terminals. Prior to joining Ports America, Khan served as director of infrastructure and energy finance (IEF) at Citigroup, New York, where he led that company’s financing of transportation sector projects in the Americas. During his time with Citigroup, he also served as the director and regional head of IEF in its Sydney, Australia, office. Obituary: John Newbold

John "Jock" Newbold died Saturday, April 12, in New York. He was among the most well-known and highly respected figures in shipping and financial circles. Jock was most recently a Non-Executive Director of Castalia Partners Limited and also a member of the Advisory Board of Castalia Straits L.P. Newbold retired from Citigroup in 1997 after a 36-year career, the last 21 of which were spent with Citibank’s business with the shipping industry. From 1985 to 1997, Newbold was Division Executive in charge of the Global Shipping Division with offices in New York, London, Piraeus, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Transportation Secretary Swears in New Seaway Administrator

Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters swore in Collister Johnson, Jr. as the Administrator of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC). Together with Canada’s St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, the SLSDC jointly operates and markets the binational Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway waterway that provides global market access to and from North America’s manufacturing and agricultural heartland. The SLSDC, one of ten agencies within the Department, operates and maintains the two U.S. locks in Massena, N.Y., on the Nation’s northern border. Johnson has served previously as President and Chief Executive Officer of FastShip Atlantic, Incorporated and as Chairman of the Virginia Port Authority.

Glacier Society Presents Award to Connecticut Congressman

Bernard Koether III of Westport, Chairman of the Stratford-based Glacier Society, presented Congressman Robert Simmons of Connecticut’s Second District, a Glacier Society plaque in recognition of the lawmaker’s legislative efforts. The presentation took place June 6 at a reception in New Canaan. Simmons is a strong supporter of the movement to re-commission the USS/USCGC Glacier and return her to active service for the benefit of humanity.
