ZIM Names Trio of LNG Containerships

The naming ceremonies of three new vessels joining ZIM’s fleet were held in Korea and China this week for ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, continuing ZIM’s widescale fleet renovation.The naming ceremony of Zim Mount Elbrus and Zim Mount Vinson, the final additions to the series of ten 15,000 TEUs advanced LNG vessels, took place at the SHI Geoje shipyard in Korea. These vessels, showcasing state-of-the-art LNG technology, were named in a traditional manner by their respective godmothers, Mrs. Hani Kalinsky, ZIM's EVP Pacific Business Unit, and Mrs.

ONE Orders 12 Methanol Dual-Fuel Containerships

Japanese shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has signed shipbuilding contracts with Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for the construction of 12 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships.Each shipyard will build six vessels and are all scheduled to be delivered from 2027. The order represents ONE’s inaugural fleet of methanol-dual fuel vessels and plays a key role in reaching ONE’s sustainable goals as part of its green strategy."Our decision to invest in methanol-dual fuel vessels aligns with ONE's Green Strategy as part of our key initiatives.

WinGD to Supply Methanol-fueled Engines for Six New Containerships

Swiss marine power company WinGD announced it will supply X-DF-M methanol-fueled engines for a series of six container vessels to be built at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China. The 9,000 TEU vessels will each be powered by an X82DF-M engine built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD), to be delivered in August 2025. The new vessel series will enter service in 2026 and 2027.The new order, which includes options for further engines, expands WinGD's methanol engine orders into the 82-bore size.

Maersk Takes Delivery of World's First Methanol-fueled Container Feeder

Maersk has taken delivery of the world’s first container feeder to be fueled by methanol.The 2,100 TEU vessel was built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and Hyundai Heavy Industries and features dual fuel main and auxiliary engines from MAN Energy Solutions that are able to operate on cleaner-burning methanol.The ABS-classed vessel, HMD Hull #4168, is embarking on its maiden voyage from Ulsan to Copenhagen for a naming ceremony in September, when the ships is expected to take the name Laura Maersk.

China’s Shipyards Operating at Full Capacity

The major shipyards in China are operating at full capacity, resulting in potential order backlogs, reports China Daily.The value of China's ship exports rose by over 21% year-on-year to $8.86 billion in the January-May period, according to China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry data. Orders rose by 50% over that time, giving China a 67% world share.Orders have included container ships, bulk carriers, LNG carriers, vehicle carriers and offshore vessels. Maersk Orders Six Methanol-powered Container Vessels

Shipping group A.P. Moller-Maersk on Monday said it had ordered from China's Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group six mid-size container vessels capable of running on green methanol.The ships, which run on dual-fuel engines that can operate on both fuel oil and methanol, can carry upwards of 9,000 containers. Chinese Shipyards Feast on Record LNG Tanker Orders as S.Korea Builders Fully Booked

China is making fast inroads in the market for newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers as local and foreign shipowners turn to its shipbuilders for the specialty vessels because long dominant yards in South Korea are fully booked. Three Chinese shipyards - only one of them having experience building large LNG tankers - won nearly 30% of this year's record orders for 163 new gas carriers, claiming ground in a sector where South Korea usually captures most of the business.

Costamare Orders Eight New Containerships, Buys Seven Secondhand Bulkers

Shipowner Costamare Inc. announced it has ordered eight newbuild containerships and acquired seven secondhand bulk carriers.The Monaco-headquartered company said Thursday it signed contracts with an unspecified Asian shipyard for two 13,000 TEU capacity newbuilds and exercised options under a previous agreement for two more of the same capacity plus four additional 15,000 TEU capacity vessels. MAN ME-GI Engines Ordered for 10 Seaspan Box Ships

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group has ordered 10 MAN B&W 7G80ME-C10.5-GI engines in connection with the construction of 10 7,000-teu containerships for Seaspan Corporation, the world's largest, independent container vessel owner.The contract includes an option for five further vessels. Engine delivery is scheduled from October 2023 to 2024; Seaspan has  already chartered the ships on long-term contracts.Upon completion, the newbuildings will become the largest ME-GI-powered container vessels built by a Chinese shipyard.Thomas S.

Tufton Invests in Wind Power for 82,000 dwt Bulk Carrier

TR Lady Shipping Ltd, a portfolio company of Tufton Investment Management Ltd (“Tufton”), signed a contract Anemoi Marine Technologies to supply and fit the bulk carrier TR Lady with three large Rotor Sails and Anemoi’s patented Rail Deployment System, a system designed to allow the Rotor Sails to be moved across the deck to minimize impact on port operations.TR Lady is a CS Marine design 82,000DWT Kamsarmax bulker, built in 2017 by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, and managed by Tufton. TR Lady will be retrofitted with the Rotor Sails during scheduled dry docking of the vessel.

Navis Solution on Evergreen Newbuilds

Algoma Conveyor Heading for Canada

The provider of marine transportation services Algoma Central Corporation announced that the recently completed Algoma Conveyor, the third Seawaymax Equinox Class 740’ self-unloading dry-bulk carrier, has begun its delivery voyage from China to Canada.The vessel began its two month journey home, departing the Yangzijiang shipyard on February 16, 2019.After taking fuel in the Philippines the vessel will cross the Pacific Ocean, travelling through the Panama Canal and from there will make its way to Canada. Costamare Orders Five Newbuild Boxships from Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding

Costamare announced the conclusion of shipbuilding contracts and long term charter agreements for five newbuild containerships, as well as the acquisition and chartering of two secondhand containerships. The Company has ordered five newbuild containerships from Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, each of approximately 12,690 TEU capacity. The vessels are expected to be delivered between the second quarter of 2020 and the second quarter of 2021 and upon delivery they will commence a ten-year time charter to Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. The acquisition is expected to be financed with cash on hand and debt. In June 2018, the Company agreed to purchase two 2013-built, 5,000 TEU wide-beam containerships, the c/v Megalopolis and the c/v Marathopolis.

Video: CMA CGM Box Ship Smashes Into Dock

A CMA CGM containership plowed head-on into a pier at India's largest container port on Saturday, causing visible damage to the dock.The 336-meter, 10,000 TEU CMA CGM Mumbai reportedly lost steering while attempting to berth at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port,on the west coast of India. Officials said damage to the pier is only minor, and the damage to the ship is unkonwn. No injuries were reported.The Hong-Kong flagged vessel, owned by CMA CGM and operated by Seaspan, was delivered in May this year from Chinese yard Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

Scorpio Bulkers Back in the Black

With a net profit of USD 0.8 million, Scorpio Bulkers shows positive results in the second quarter of 2018 compared to a net loss was USD 13.4 million for the the same period in 2017.Total vessel revenues for the second quarter of 2018 were $60.6 million, compared to $37.7 million for the same period in 2017.The shipping company, which owns and operates dry bulk carriers, took delivery of the SBI Lynx, a Kamsarmax vessel, from Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding  last month.During the second quarter of 2018, the Company drew down the entire $12.8 million available to it under the $12.8 Million Credit Facility, for which the SBI Lynx serves as collateral.In June 2018, the Company received a commitment for a loan facility of up to $30.0 million from ING Bank N.V.

Algoma Central: Refund Given for Cancelled Ship Contract

Algoma Central Corporation (TSX: ALC), a provider of marine transportation services, announced that it has received full refund of all instalment payments made in connection with the now-cancelled shipbuilding contracts with Uljanik d.d. and 3Maj Shipyard of Croatia.Algoma entered into five shipbuilding contracts with 3Maj Shipyard, an operating unit of Uljanik d.d of Croatia. According to a press release from Algoma, after considerable delay, the first of the five vessels was delivered in 2018; however, Algoma cancelled the remaining four contracts as the shipyard’s financial difficulties led to a much-publicized attempt to refinance the company and shipyard management was unable to put forward a credible plan that would lead to completion of the remaining hulls.
