The Port of Los Angeles moved more cargo in 2017 than in any time in the Port’s 110-year history, racking up 9,343,192 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), a 5.5 percent increase over 2016’s record-breaking year. It’s the most cargo moved annually by a Western Hemisphere port. “We are powering Los Angeles’ economy to new heights every year, because we know that lasting prosperity means investing boldly in jobs, opportunity, and growth,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “The success of our Port tells the story of a city whose moment has arrived — and we will continue pushing forward as we expand our role in the global economy,” Eric added. “2017 was a year beyond expectations but it was not by chance,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka.

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved a $1.17 billion fiscal year (FY) 2016/17 annual budget for the Port of Los Angeles. As in years past, budget allocations closely align and support the four key objectives of the Port’s 2012-2017 Strategic Plan, which include: development of a world-class infrastructure that promotes growth; implementation of an efficient, secure and environmentally sustainable supply chain; improved financial performance of Port assets; and strengthened relationships with Port stakeholders. “Our Port Strategic Plan has been a great tool to keep us consistently focused and committed to our infrastructure and operational priorities,” said Ambassador Vilma Martinez, Harbor Commission President.

The Port of Los Angeles and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Report (EIS/EIR) for the Yusen Terminals Inc. (YTI) Container Terminal Improvements Project, located at Berths 212-224 at the Port of Los Angeles, on the north side of Terminal Island along the Cerritos Channel, near the East Basin. The proposed project entails improving Berths 214-216 wharves, increasing berth depth from -45 to -53 feet, and improving Berths 217-220 wharves to make way for 100-foot gauge gantry cranes, as well as deepening to a -47 feet berth depth. The project will also construct additional on-dock rail yard capacity for YTI.

The Los Angeles Harbor Commission approved a resolution initiating an Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report (EIS/EIR) on a proposed berth-improvement project by Yusen Terminals Inc. (YTI). Start of the EIR process is the first step in YTl’s proposed plan to deepen and improve its terminal facilities, allowing the terminal operator to accommodate next-generation vessels and increase cargo volume at its site. “Terminal modernization and improvements such as those proposed by Yusen Terminals Inc. are key to the Port of Los Angeles’ long-term global competitiveness and success,” said Port Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D.

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have selected seven local maritime and cargo companies as this year’s recipients of the Clean Air Action Plan Air Quality Awards, an honor presented to those taking extraordinary measures to cut air emissions, modernize facilities and implement innovative operations to reduce air pollution. “These partners have shown a real commitment to cleaner and greener port operations, going above and beyond what is required,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D. “The Clean Air Action Plan awards are a fantastic way to put a spotlight on the oftentimes unheralded efforts of the goods movement industry to meet and exceed air quality goals…

VYCON a designer and manufacturer of high-speed flywheel based, environmentally friendly, energy storage systems, announced that the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) has awarded funds to three POLA operators for the purchase of VYCON REGEN systems. VYCON, in cooperation with Yusen Terminals Inc. Marine Terminal Corporation and TraPac, applied to the Port's 2006-07 Air Quality Mitigation Incentive Program for funding to purchase and install Vycon's flywheel energy storage systems for the terminals' RTG cranes. POLA's Technical Advisory Committee approved one system for each port tenant, requesting that the systems be applied to cranes of different brands.

The Port of Tacoma announced plans to build a $300m, 168-acre (68-hectare) container terminal on the industrial east side of Tacoma's Blair Waterway. The terminal will be leased to a container terminal operator, Yusen Terminal Tacoma Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of NYK Line. The plan was approved by NYK Line at its Board of Directors July 26 meeting in Tokyo, Japan. The Port of Tacoma Commission will hold a special meeting in Tacoma tonight to consider and approve the final lease. The lease agreement will introduce Yusen Terminal Tacoma Inc. (YTTI) to the Pacific Northwest. Another subsidiary of NYK Line, Yusen Terminals, Inc. (YTI), is currently operating a terminal in the Port of Los Angeles and now the NYK Group is expanding into the Puget Sound.

The Port of Los Angeles is making $6m available for projects that reduce air pollution generated by Port operations. The funding is a component of the 2006-2007 Port Air Quality Mitigation Incentive Program. An applicant workshop and vendor fair will be held on August 29 at 10 a.m. Deadline for submissions is October 24, 2006. The Port Air Quality Mitigation Incentive Program provides financial incentives for programs that will reduce air emissions that affect neighboring communities of Wilmington and San Pedro, as well as the surrounding areas. Proposals will be reviewed by Port staff and members of the Port Community Advisory Committee, judged on effectiveness and emissions reductions, and ultimately approved and awarded funding by the Los Angeles Harbor Commission.

The Board of Harbor Commissioners this week approved spending $3.12 million over the next year on 16 customer projects aimed at reducing air emissions. In total, over their lifetime these projects reduce NOx emissions by more than 1,000 tons, and particulate matter by nearly 30 tons. The projects were reviewed by the Port's Technical Advisory Committee and the Port Community Advisory Committee, and the final 16 were recommended to the Board for funding consideration. "We received more than 30 applications for project funding from our customers for consideration," said Geraldine Knatz, Port of Los Angeles executive director. "This shows the level of commitment we all have to reducing the air emissions created by Port-related operations.
