In the global quest for achieving net zero emissions and slowing down global warming, carbon capture and storage (CCUS) technology has emerged as an important solution. Among the notable projects being developed in the field is the Northern Lights offshore carbon capture and storage project in Norway, a country with long experience with offshore CO2 storage.The transition to a sustainable energy future requires innovative solutions that go beyond simply halting fossil fuel projects.

Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. has won a contract to build two CO2 carriers for Northern Lights, a Norwegian carbon capture and storage project.Under the contract awarded by the Northern Lights JV, owned equally by Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, the Chinese shipbuilder will build two CO2 carriers, each with a cargo size of 7,500 m3 and a length of 130 meters.The two vessels, designed to transport liquid CO2 with purpose-built pressurized cargo tanks, are expected to be ready for delivery by mid-2024. The primary fuel for the ships will be LNG, keeping emissions low.

In response to growing demand from the cruise liner, large ferry and exploration vessel sectors, SKF has upgraded its marine stabilizer production facilities in Hamburg, Germany. The new investments include a 130-metric-ton capacity heavy duty overhead crane, two new assembly stations for large stabilizers and additional production space dedicated to the manufacture of smaller units. The expanded facilities will allow SKF to increase production of its largest S800 stabilizer system from eigth to sixteen sets a year.

Cruise ships, freighters or yachts require complex supply systems on board to  be able to travel long distances in the open sea. For the supply of oil and gas, for example, many kilometers of pipelines are installed above and below deck. To optimize the limited space available inside the ship, the bending radii of these pipes must be kept very tight. Therefore, shipbuilders require systems that enable the production of pipes with very small bending radii. To meet this demand, Schwarze-Robitec developed the pipe cold bending machine CNC 220.

A new ferry being built at the Cemre shipyard in Turkey for UK operator Wightlink will feature a comprehensive range of modern Wärtsilä equipment and systems to ensure a high level of environmental efficiency. In addition to conventional fuel, the new vessel will be the first ferry to utilzse Wärtsilä hybrid battery technology to improve efficiency, reduce the exhaust emissions and lower the noise level. The scope includes four 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 generating sets, electrical and automation (E&A) systems, and a sanitary discharge system.

The global cleantech company Evac has been chosen to supply its total waste management system to the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, the Atlantic Mercy. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Mercy Ships, the ship will provide medical care in the poorest parts of Africa. According to the manufacturer, the propulsion system has performed convincingly all along the line and surpassed the expectations of her owner, the Welsh company Turbine Transfers Ltd, a subsidiary of Holyhead Towing Company. The VLJs are the main propulsion system of the DNV Classed 21m offshore service catamaran, which was designed for Turbine Transfers by BMT Nigel Gee and built by AMC. The Crew Transport Vessel will take service technicians to offshore wind farms at sites all around Europe, initially at the Westernmost Rough site off the Humber for Dong Energy.

Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions and services provider, has been contracted to supply propulsion packages for 24 new vessels being built for the Singapore based China Navigation Co. Pte. Ltd (CNCo). Led by calls to reduce emissions (CO2, NOx, PM-values), while at the same time increasing energy efficiency with a long-term eye on the diminishing supply of fossil fuels, it is clear for all that “alternatives” — even under the aspect of higher investment costs — will pay back in the future. Earlier this year, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering firm Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA) completed a major milestone with the delivery of the final of 54 GPA 254L AHTS vessels, also known as the Bourbon Liberty 200 series, at Zhejiang Shipyard in China. Tank gauging systems specialist PSM’s new iCT level pressure and temperature sensors are suitable for all ship sizes and types. The requirement for increasing amounts of reliable data on board has driven up demand for sensors. One consequence of larger manufacturing volumes has been that sensors have become relatively inexpensive. However, installation costs are another matter, and continue to rise. Today, the cost of installing a level gauging system either as a new build or a retrofit can often exceed the cost of the equipment itself. This is particularly apparent in respect of cable costs and system commissioning.
