A Rising Sun of Change

“No new fishing vessel has been (added) during the period,” says the email we get from Japan’s largest seafood company, Maruha Nichiro Corp. A year earlier, they had bought shares in New Zealand outfit, Sanford, which had just chartered a Nordic-looking vessel. Seafood rival, Nissui, had just done the same, buying New Zealand and Nordic. That all happened after the Naval Architect’s Society of Japan said a vessel based on the Icelandic design of Reykjavik’s Navis was its Ship of the Year.

MAN Diesel Ship Engine Production Steady

Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding co., Ltd. (MES; President: Takao Tanaka) achieved production volume of 181 MAN B&W low-speed diesel engines manufactured at the Tamano Works Machinery Factory (Tamano, Okayama Prefecture) in fiscal 2015, representing for 3.28 million horsepower (results in the previous fiscal year were 181 engines and 3.54 million horsepower). Since MES formed a technical tie-up with the Denmark-based B&W (now known as MAN Diesel & Turbo) on diesel engines in 1926, it has built a production track record as one of the world’s leading manufacturers, with cumulative horsepower production of over 90 million horsepower.

Rapp Hydema Completes FAT for ARRV Deck Machinery

Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) of Rapp deck machinery for the Alaskan Regional Research Vessel (ARRV) were recently undertaken successfully in Seattle. Other than winches, the tests included the Load-Handing System (LHS), which was tested in a unique upside-down configuration. A UNOLS delegation, along with representatives of Marinette Marine Shipyard and the U.S. Navy’s OpNav office, witnessed the tests. The diverse machinery package was manufactured locally in compliance with the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), the source of original financing for the project. Dan Markovic, Rapp Seattle’s Engineering and Program Manager for the ARRV project, said that “the results of the FAT met and, at times, exceeded our expectations.

MES: Diesel Engine Production at Record-high

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES with president Mr. Yasuhiko Katoh) attained the output horsepower of the Mitsui-MAN B&W Low Speed Marine Diesel Engine manufactured at its Machinery Factory of Tamano Works amounting to record-high 4.52 million hp (by 200 units) in the fiscal year of 2007, which exceeds the previous record of 4.01 million horse power (by 195 units).
