New InmarsatSatellite Reaches Geostationary Orbit, Testing Begins

I-6 F1, Inmarsat's most sophisticated commercial communications satellite\, has reached geostationary orbit and begun on-orbit testing, Carrying both L-band and Ka-band payloads, I-6 F1 will deliver a further enhancement of Inmarsatā€™s ELERA and Global Xpress networks respectively.The satellite, the size of a London double-decker bus, with a solar array ā€˜wingspanā€™ larger than a Boeing 767, was launched by MHI in Japan in December 2021. Inmarsat Launches Fourth Global Xpress Satellite

Inmarsat, a provider of global mobile satellite communications, has confirmed the successful launch of the fourth, high-speed broadband communications satellite in its transformational Global Xpress (GX) constellation. Inmarsat GX is the worldā€™s first globally available, broadband connectivity service and was created to enable communities across the world to benefit from the emerging digital society. Inmarsat-5 F4 (I-5 F4) was launched by SpaceX on a Falcon 9 rocket at 00:21 (BST) / 19:21 (ET) from the historic launch pad 39A at NASAā€™s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

USN's MUOS-5 Satellite Reaches Orbit

The Navy's fifth Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite has reached operational orbit and has successfully deployed its arrays and antennas. On Oct. 22, the MUOS team raised the MUOS-5 satellite to an operationally-suitable orbit. The team completed a series of deployments of the satellite's solar arrays and antennas, with the last occurring successfully Oct. 30. MUOS-5 launched June 24 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and experienced a failure of its orbit raising propulsion system that halted the satellite's transfer orbit maneuver to its geosynchronous test orbit. The MUOS team ensured the satellite remained stable, safe, and under positive control while it investigated the issue and examined options.

USN's Fourth MUOS Satellite Launched

After a two-day delay due to tropical storm conditions, the Navy's fourth Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite launched at 6:18 a.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 41. MUOS-4, whose signal was acquired approximately three hours after launch, completes the initial operational constellation and provides near global network coverage for warfighters and combatant commanders. This array allows mobile forces, including submarines, surface ships and aircraft, to communicate around the world via the narrowband spectrum. User communities that will primarily benefit include ground forces at the individual soldier level but also include members of all services and special forces.

Indian Navy to Buy 50 Ship Borne Drones

Seeking to enhance its surveillance capabilities on its warships, the Indian Navy (IN) has now announced a global competition for procuring ā€˜Ship-Borne Unmanned Aerial Vehiclesā€™ (UAV) that can augment various patrolling and search-related tactics on its vessels. The navy is planning to acquire a total of 50 shipborne drones for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions as part of its effort to boost maritime security, says a report in PTI. "We want to have such a capability and want to know what kinds of products are available in the market," defence sources said. At present, the navy operates two squadrons of Israeli- origin Heron and Searcher Mk-II UAVs which are based in Kochi and Porbandar.

Navy Communications Satellite Launched

The Navy's third Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite was launched today at 8:04 p.m. EST from Space Launch Complex 41. This communications satellite will significantly improve capability for Navy and Department of Defense tactical operators. Over the next several days, the satellite will transition to its geosynchronous orbit location 22,000 miles above Earth. Its solar arrays and mesh antennas will then be deployed and on-orbit testing will begin for eventual commissioning into service. Upon acceptance for operational use, MUOS 3 along with MUOS 1 and 2 already on-orbit, will provide communications coverage to more than three-quarters of the globe.

US Navy Prepares for Communications Satellite Launch

U.S. Navy military and civilian engineers are preparing the latest military communications satellite for a planned Jan. 20 launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The satellite is part of MUOS, or Mobile User Objective System, which operates like a smartphone network from space, vastly improving secure satellite communications for mobile U.S. forces. Unlike its predecessor system, MUOS provides users a global, on-demand, beyond-line-of-sight capability to transmit and receive high-quality voice and mission data from a high-speed Internet Protocol-based system.

Kongsberg Launches SESAME Straits Project

Kongsberg Norcontrol IT said it will lead a three-year project called SESAME Straits (Secure, Efficient and Safe maritime traffic Management in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore), which aims to create solutions to significantly improve the safety and efficiency of ship navigation across the world. An important test-bed for IMOā€™s e-Navigation implementation strategy, the objective of the SESAME Straits Project is to develop and validate a revolutionary concept for a next generation Ship Traffic Management System (STMS) in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS).

Peopleā€™s Republic of Korea Launches Satellite

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been officially advised by the Democratic Peopleā€™s Republic of Korea (DPRK) of its intention to proceed with the launch of an experimental communications satellite. In a letter sent to IMO on 11 March 2009, the Maritime Administration of the DPRK said that the launch would take place between 4 and 8 April 2009, between the hours of 0200 and 0700 (UTC). The letter also identified the coordinates of two potential ā€œdangerous areasā€, in the Sea of Japan and the Northern Pacific Ocean, which ships should avoid during those times. The submission of such information to the Organization follows IMO Assembly resolution A.706(17) and related Maritime Safety Committee circularsā€¦

MES: Diesel Engine Production at Record-high

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES with president Mr. Yasuhiko Katoh) attained the output horsepower of the Mitsui-MAN B&W Low Speed Marine Diesel Engine manufactured at its Machinery Factory of Tamano Works amounting to record-high 4.52 million hp (by 200 units) in the fiscal year of 2007, which exceeds the previous record of 4.01 million horse power (by 195 units). Mitsui-MAN B&W Diesel Engine Achieves World Record

This world record is established when MES completes the construction of Mitsui-MAN B&W 6S50MC-C Mark 7 at its Tamano Works (Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture) for Sanoyasu Hishino Meisho Corporation (with president Mr. Shinich Kimura), who will install such engine to a chip carrier of 4.35 million cubic feet (shipyard No. 1260) to her owner, Mitsui OSK Lines. In the wake of growing demand for new shipbuilding boosted by active ocean cargo transport, the production of diesel engine by MES is significantly increasing recently. Only after two years and five months since MES achieved 50 million horse power production in October 2005, it establishes accumulated 60 million horse power record since it produced the first engine in 1928.

Coast Guard Looks To Space For Maritime Awareness

The U.S. Coast Guard announced its intention to explore increased use of space as a tool to enhance awareness of activities in ports, coastal waters and their approaches. The Coast Guard has been studying the feasibility of receiving maritime automatic identification system (AIS) signals from space since 2001. In May 2004 the Coast Guard contracted with ORBCOMM, a satellite data communications company, to develop and build the capability to receive process and forward AIS signals from space via an AIS receiver onboard a communications satellite. In addition, ORBCOMM will provide the ground systems capable of processing the AIS signals and relaying the collected messages to the Coast Guard.

Merrimac Awarded Order For Military Satellite

Merrimac Industries, Inc. announced that it has received an order for $430,000 to supply several Multi-Mix Microtechnology products a military communications satellite program. The satellite communications system is designed to significantly improve communications for mobile U.S. forces. Merrimac was selected based on the company's ability to provide dividing and combining devices that are able to handle very high RF power, provide very low insertion loss, and are contained within a caseless fusion bonded assembly. The program significantly improves communications for warfighters while maintaining backward compatibility to the existing communications systems for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Seafarers In Trouble Owe Debt Of Gratitude To Tiny Plastic Boats

When the cold September sea reached out her icy fingers to claim fisherman John Roberts, a plastic boat in a cozy British pub came to his rescue. Just as Roberts began to think he would succumb to the Atlantic's numbing clutches, his spirits were buoyed by the sound of flares going off above the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) station in his home port of Sennen Cove. "When I heard those two bangs and knew what they were, then I knew somebody was coming for me," said the 53-year-old veteran of England's treacherous southwestern coastal waters. Roberts insists he owes a debt of gratitude to the RNLI and the Royal Navy helicopter that plucked him from the sea.
