The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has settled with two shipping companies over claims of violations of EPA’s Vessel General Permit issued under the Clean Water Act.Under the terms of the settlements, Swire Shipping Pte. Ltd. will pay $137,000 in penalties and MMS Co. Naval Dome said it has completed the pilot testing of its multi-layered cyber security system for Lloyd’s Register aboard XT Shipping’s Zim Genova. The 4,300 TEU containership was operational during the tests, which were supervised by the classification society and bridge systems provider Totem Plus. The pilot tests, carried out as part of the classification society’s initiative to develop cyber security guidelines, and the first of their kind on a vessel in transit, evaluated the Naval Dome system’s ability to defend ships against a variety of cyber-attacks.

One year after the introduction of the rail shuttle between Antwerp and Metz, the intermodal logistics operator Multi-Modal Rail (MMR) has doubled the frequency. As of the middle of January the Dutch-French company provides a second weekly container shuttle. This increased frequency offers shippers the ideal connection to deepsea services in the port of Antwerp, for their import and export consignments in the Alsace-Lorraine region. The shuttle leaves on Monday and Wednesday from Antwerp Main Hub and arrives the following day at the MMS terminal in Metz. "If there is sufficient market demand we will raise the frequency still further, to three times per week," declared MMR general manager Benjamin Hotter.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) Final Rule for Leasing of Oil and Gas or Sulfur in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) will be published in the Federal Register on March 30, 2016. The final rule updates and streamlines the existing OCS leasing regulations. Mumbai-based ship management company MMS Maritime India has announced  it is to begin a major recruitment drive for Indian seafarers, after its parent company, the Japanese ship owner Meiji Shipping Group unveiled an expansion of its tanker fleet. MMSI  provides crew to Meiji’s oil and gas tanker division which numbers 19 ships. MMSI CEO Dr Sanjay Bhavnani  said he expected four new tankers to be delivered to Meiji by the beginning of 2016. The 28,000 DWT medium range (MR) vessels are presently under construction at a Japanese shipyard.

China's Unipec is taking two very large crude carriers with around 4 million barrels of Urals crude to Asia in a move to support Russia's main export grade, traders said on Thursday. Traders said Unipec had booked two VLCCs - Front Tina and British Vintage - and will fill it with the Russian crude after actively buying smaller cargoes in the Platts window in recent days. On Thursday, Unipec bought a 100,000 Urals tonnes cargo from Eni in the Baltic at dated Brent minus $1.45 a barrel for Sept 25-29 delivery, traders said. The case is the latest move by Baghdad to deter customers and thwart independent exports of crude from the autonomous Kurdistan region. The federal government claims sole authority to manage sales of all the oil in Iraq. The Iraqi oil ministry said on Thursday that MMS operated five vessels that had transported oil on behalf of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) from a Turkish port.

The statement said MMS operated five vessels that had transported crude oil on behalf of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) from a Turkish port. "MMS is liable for damages of at least $318 million, and possibly significantly more, as a result of its willing and active participation in the KRG's illegal crude oil export scheme," the statement read.
