BW LPG has demonstrated the value of dual-fuel LPG operations beyond the company’s initial aim of meeting IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap regulations.In October 2020, the LPG carrier BW Gemini became the first very large gas carrier (VLGC) to have its low-speed main engine converted to an LPG dual-fuel engine. The project started several years earlier, sparked by Oslo-listed BW LPG’s preparations for the IMO’s 2020 Sulphur Cap regulations.Compared to heavy fuel oil, LPG reduces Sox emissions by approximately 97%

VLGC Lucky Gas Delivered to Al Seer Marine

Al Seer Marine has taken delivery of its first very large gas carrier (VLGC) from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries.The 84,300-cubic-meter-capacity Lucky Gas is employed on a 10-year charter with UAE-based BGN International DMCC.The VLGC forms part of an AED 495 million transaction signed in 2021 by ABGC DMCC, the joint venture between Al Seer Marine and BGN International.Al Seer Marine, a unit of Abu Dhabi-based International Holding Company, is in the midst of a fleet expansion program

World’s Largest VLGC Ready for Delivery

The world's largest very large gas carrier (VLGC) has been unveiled in Shanghai ahead of its delivery to Singapore-based owner Petredec Global.The dual-fuel LPG vessel Harzand was designed and built by Jiangnan Shipyard and has a capacity of 93,000cbm. It is 230 meters long and 36.6 meters wide.Harzand is the first of six underway for Petredec. The order was signed in November 2020 and calls for the vessels to be fitted with MAN ES LGIP engines and a shaft generator to utilise

Dorian LPG Takes Delivery of Dual-fuel VLGC

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipping company Dorian LPG announced it has taken delivery of the newly built very large gas carrier (VLGC) Captain Markos from Japanese shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy Industries.The 84,000 cubic meter capacity VLGC is a dual-fuel vessel capable of running on on LPG and low-sulfur fuel oil.The ship  is owned by a Japanese owner will be operated by Dorian LPG under a 13-year bareboat charter, trading in the Helios LPG Pool which Dorian LPG jointly operates with Phoenix Tankers Pte. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd.

Newbuild VLGC to Be Equipped with Norsepower's Rotor Sails

Auxiliary wind propulsion systems provider Norsepower announced a contract for the delivery and installation of two Norsepower Rotor Sails on a newbuild Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) for global shipping company IINO Lines.The new LPG dual fuel ship – delivered today from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd in Korea is ready to be equipped with two bespoke 20m tall Norsepower Rotor Sails side by side. The new, specially designed, 20m x 4m units have been developed to accommodate the vessel’s specific air draught limits.

Approval in Principle Granted for VLGC with Carbon Capture

China Classification Society (CCS) has issued Approval in Principle (AIP) for the design of the world’s first low carbon very large gas carrier (VLGC). The concept design is based on an LPG dual fuel ship type with a carbon capture system onboard. Two Type C low-temperature carbon dioxide storage tanks are located on both sides of the open deck in the cargo area, and the designed carbon dioxide capture rate of the system can reach over 85%. Wilhelmsen Takes Over Management of HLS' New VLGC

Norwegian vessel operator Wilhelmsen Ship Management announced it has taken over management of the newbuild liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier HLS Blue Sapphire.The 86,000-cubic-meter-capacity very large gas carrier (VLGC) is the first managed by Wilhelmsen for new client Hyundai LNG Shipping of South Korea.The LPG dual fuel vessel was built at South Korea's Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Ltd.

Høglund Delivers Automation and Control System for Ethane Carrier

Tech File: Wärtsilä Delivers Last of 15 LPG Fuel Supply Systems

Wärtsilä said it completed delivery of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel supply system (LFSS) to 15 very large gas carrier (VLGC) vessels owned and operated by BW LPG, which has the world’s largest fleet of VLGC vessels.BW LPG ordered the first four of these 15 systems in 2018, immediately following Wärtsilä’s full-scale testing of a full-sized two-stroke marine engine operating with LPG fuel. This was the world’s first such testing protocol, and the performance attained was seen as exceeding expectations.

BW LPG Agrees to Sell 2006-built VLGC BW Trader

BW LPG said Thursday it had agreed to sell the 2006-built Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) BW Trader to an undisclosed buyer. The VLGC has a carrying capacity of 78,631 CBM. "The sale and delivery of the vessel to its new owner for further trading is expected to be completed by March 2022 and when completed, is expected to generate approximately $20 million in liquidity and a netbook gain of approximately  $2 million," Oslo-listed BW LPG said. Anders Onarheim, CEO of BW LPG said: "This sale is in line with our strategy of seeking to optimize our assets through the cycles and gives further strength to our balance sheet and liquidity position.”With this sale, BW LPG owns and operates a fleet of 39 modern VLGCs.

'Unprecedented' Ship-to-ship LNG Transfer Off Brazil

Wilson Sons, through its Towage unit, participated in the first ship-to-ship offshore operation for the transfer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through a ULGC (Ultra Large Gas Carrier) vessel of Q-FLEX type in Brazil. The ship is considered one of the largest gas carriers in the world with a capacity of 215,000 cubic meters.This unprecedented operation took place at the Celse’s terminal, in Barra dos Coqueiros (SE), and aimed to supply the Porto de Sergipe Thermoelectric Power Plant (UTE), operated by the company.

Belgium based shipping company Exmar has taken delivery of the newly built dual-fuel liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier Flanders Innovation from Jiangnan Shipyard in China.The 88,000-cubic-meter-capacity very large gas carrier (VLGC) is the first of two ordered by Exmar and is said to be the largest dual-fuel LPG carrier in the world.The innovative vessel, capable of running on LPG fuel, is is expected to slash operational emissions by 38% compared to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) reference lines for VLGCs

Wärtsilä Wins VLGC Cargo Handling Systems Order

Wärtsilä was contracted to supply another of its gas cargo handling systems. The order was placed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in April 2021. The Wärtsilä system will be installed in a 91,000 cbm capacity Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) vessel being built for a tanker operator.The system includes a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) reliquefaction system for cargo condensing and an automated control system. Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for June 2022.

BW LPG's BW Gemini, the world’s first Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) to be retrofitted with LPG dual-fuel propulsion, completed loading at Enterprise Terminal in Houston Monday. BW LPG, part of BW Group, said Monday that the VLGC had completed its "historic" crossing of the Pacific Ocean on LPG propulsion on December 5."BW Gemini is carrying a record load of 49,000 metric tons of LPG on a single keel. As the vessel refueled while loading and no additional bunkering was needed, she has proceeded on her voyage.

Oslo-listed BW LPG, the world’s largest LPG shipping company, ordered Wärtsilä LPG Fuel Supply System (LFSS) for retrofit to three very large gas carrier (VLGC) vessels. BW LPG had previously ordered four Wärtsilä LFSS’ in 2018, and an additional eight systems in February 2020. Singapore-based gas carrier operator BW LPG has sold Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) BW Empress.BW Empress was built in 2005 and has a carrying capacity of 77,330 CBM. "The sale has generated approximately US$ 40 million in liquidity and an expected net book gain of approximately US$ 10 million.
