Vale VLOC Docks in Japan for First Time

'Valemax' iron ore carrier 'Berge Aconcagua' docks in Japan's Oita Port, a first for this type of ship According to '4-Traders', Brazilian mining company Vale SA informed that its Valemax iron ore vessel--one of seven large iron ore carriers currently operated by Vale--docked in Japan for the first time. The vessel, named the Berge Aconcagua, transported ore to Oita port for Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC). Valemax vessels can carry 400,000 metric tons of iron ore. Vale has encountered difficulties docking Valemax vessels in China--where several of the vessels are being built--due to resistance from Chinese shipowners and alleged port handling capacity problems.

ClassNK Approves First Corrosion Resistant Steel

April 27 (Tokyo) - ClassNK announced today that it had issued the world’s first type approval for corrosion resistant steel to the new NSGP®-1 steel manufactured by Nippon Steel Corporation’s Oita Works . The approval certifies that the new steel, which has been specifically designed for application on the inner bottom of the cargo oil tanks of crude oil tanker, complies with the IMO’s new performance standard for corrosion resistant steels. MHI Delivers 300th Ship to MOL

The first ship to MOL was the CHIKUGOGAWA MARU, a cargo-and-passenger ship delivered in May 1890.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) delivered MOL COMPETENCE, a large-size containership, to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) at the Koyagi Plant of MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works. The container ship marks the 300th vessel delivered from MHI to MOL. The 8,100 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), 90,000 gross ton MOL COMPETENCE is the largest container ship built by MHI. MOL Launches Iron Ore Carrier

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, has launched one of the world’s largest iron ore carrier, the Brasil Maru (327,180 MT DWT). Naming and delivery ceremonies were held at the Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Chiba Works on December 7, 2007. It will transport Brazilian iron ore to Japan under a long-term contract with Nippon Steel Corporation. The new ship is the third-generation of MOL vessels to carry the Brasil Maru name, succeeding the first-generation cargo and passenger liner Brasil Maru (built in 1939) and the second-generation cargo and passenger liner Brazil Maru (built in 1954), reflect the long history of the Japan-South America route. On hand for the ceremonies were Nippon Steel President Akio Mimura and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding President Yasuhiko Kato.
