Carnival Corp. to Consolidate German Cruise Ops
Carnival Corporation will consolidate its German cruise operations, transferring the 1,590-passenger cruise ship A'ROSA Blu to its AIDA brand in summer 2004. Separately, the company announced that it has entered into a letter of intent to sell the A'ROSA brand name and the A'ROSA riverboats. With the transfer of the A'ROSA Blu, to be renamed AIDA Blu, Carnival Corp. & plc will have two distinct brands operating five vessels catering exclusively to German-speaking clientele. The four AIDA ships will operate under the informal "club resort" cruise concept aimed at younger, more active passengers while the vessel of Costa Kreuzfahrten, a division of Costa Cruises, offers a more traditional cruise experience.

Aida To Give P&O A Boost
Shipping company P&O, reporting its first-half results, said on Tuesday it was to boost its presence in the German cruise sector by buying the remaining 49 percent of Aida Cruises for 115 million marks ($49.9 million). Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. said that it would combine Aida Cruises with its Seetours International Ltd unit, to create a company accounting for around 20 percent of the German cruise sector by number of passengers. "We have two of the best consumer cruising brands and will be in a strong position to exploit the huge potential of the German market," P&O chairman Lord Sterling said in a statement. Meanwhile, the company posted a slight rise in first half pre-tax profit on Tuesday, and said the demerger of its cruise business was proceeding according to schedule.
P&O Plans to Tackle German Cruise Market
British shipping group P&O plans to enter the German cruise market, one that the company sees as underdeveloped and with huge growth potential. The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company is investing an initial $80.6 million and taking a 51 percent stake in a joint venture cruise company it is forming with privately owned German group Arkona Touristik.
