Port Of Canaveral Adds New Directors
Continued growth and organizational restructuring has prompted the Canaveral Port Authority to add three new staff directors, including two newly created positions. Margi Starkey, the former Assistant Director of Finance, has been promoted to the new position of Director of Accounting. She will assist the Chief Financial Officer and oversee the installation and implementation of a new accounting system. Starkey has been employed with the Canaveral Port Authority for 10 years. Jerry Simon, the former Chief of Security, has been promoted to the new position of Director of Security in a reorganization of the Operations Department. Simon will run the Port's Security staff, which is responsible for badging and closed circuit television monitoring.
NC Coast Guard Establishes Security Zone
Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Wilmington, Captain Jane M. Hartley, has brought in more than 100 Coast Guard active duty and reserve personnel to provide waterborne and shoreside safety and security of military equipment loading operations here and in Morehead, City, N.C. The United States is repositioning some of its military forces where required to support the President’s global war on terrorism and to prepare for future contingencies. One of the Coast Guards responsibilities, as the lead agency for maritime homeland security and as a branch of the Armed Forces, is to ensure the safety and security of military outloads in U.S. ports. The Coast Guard has established a security zone in Morehead City to run between Jan.
MSC Ships Depart as Another Arrives
The two Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships that were moored at the North Carolina State Port here are now on their way to an undisclosed location. In their place, a third MSC ship has taken residence at the port in the continued military outload efforts. The USNS Red Cloud, a 950-foot large medium speed roll on/roll off ship, arrived at the state port Sunday morning to commence another outload phase. The ship has approximately 300,000 square feet of cargo space. Security remains high in the vicinity of the port, on land and in the Cape Fear River. The waterway security zones that were put into effect last week with the arrival of the U.S. Naval ships Denebola and Regulus will remain in effect for the USNS Red Cloud.
