Rolls-Royce Opens mtu Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center in US

Rolls-Royce Power Systems Division has opened a new Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center on its mtu Aiken campus in South Carolina.First announced in 2021 and representing a low double-digit million dollar investment, the new 69,000-sq.ft. (6,400 sqm) facility is connected to the existing manufacturing operations, bringing formerly outsourced workshop and warehouse operations in-house and expands them to provide remanufacturing and overhaul of mtu Series 2000, Series 4000 and Detroit Diesel 2-Cycle engines and components, plus internal and external rework services.

Rolls-Royce to Deliver 'Cleanest' mtu Series 2000 Engines for US-built Yacht

Rolls-Royce is delivering its new generation mtu Series 2000 engines which comply with the strict emissions regulations IMO III and EPA Tier 3 for a Westport 125 yacht. It's the first time these engines are delivered for a yacht to be built in the US.

Rolls-Royce said Wednesday it would deliver its new generation mtu Series 2000 engines which comply with the strict emissions regulations IMO III and EPA Tier 3 Recreational for the first time for a yacht to be built in the US. Rolls-Royce will provide two 16V 2000 M97L engines with an integrated SCR system and a power output of 1939 KW (2600 bhp) each.The engines will be installed in a Westport 125 yacht. Rolls-Royce is also delivering its automation solution mtu NautIQ Blue Vision NG for monitoring and control of the yacht’s propulsion system.

Rolls-Royce Opens Chinese R&D Test Site for mtu Engines

Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems has opened a new test bench for mtu engines at the company’s location in Suzhou, China. Rolls-Royce's Power Systems Profitable Despite 17% Revenue Plunge

Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division has ended the 2020 financial year with an underlying operating profit of $247.3 million despite suffering a 17% drop in underlying revenue to $3.8 billion. This corresponds to an underlying operating margin of 6.5% (2019: 11.5%). Icebreaking Tug Delivered to NY Power Authority

New MTU Hybrid Propulsion Systems Introduced

New Red Funnel Catamaran with MTU Engines Ready for Operation

UK operator Red Funnel's 40-m, 277-passenger Red Jet 7 fast ferry will enter service in July after its commissioned in June. Built in the UK by the Wight Shipyard Co.,  Rolls-Royce supplied the four MTU 10V 2000 M72 engines to power the ferry. Powered by four 900 kW MTU Series 2000 engines, Red Jet 7 has a top speed of 38 knots while also meeting the  IMO for Tier II certification.The aluminum catamaran is to join its sister ships Red Jet 6, Red Jet 4 and Red Jet 3 in plying between Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

More MTU Engines Destined for Majestic Ferry in Singapore

Rolls-Royce is to supply more MTU engines to fast ferry operator Majestic Ferry in Singapore. Designed by Incat Crowther, a total of seven new fast ferries are being built at PT Cahaya shipyard in Batam, Indonesia over the next two years. Rolls-Royce is to supply 14 MTU engines for them by 2019. Each of the twin-hulled vessels is to be powered by two MTU 16V 2000 M72 units. “The determining factor for this follow-on order is the positive experience the operator has had with MTU engines and with our service,” said Chew Xiang Yu, a member of marine sales staff at MTU Asia.

Rolls-Royce Propulsion for New Hong Kong Fast Ferries

Rolls-Royce said it has been contracted to deliver Kamewa waterjet propulsion units and MTU engines for three 42m high-speed, lightweight carbon fiber ferries for operation between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China. The vessels will be built at the Brødrene Aa shipyard in Norway. The same shipyard has also ordered Rolls-Royce propulsion for two similarly-sized ferries to serve routes in the north of Norway. As well as Kamewa steel-series waterjets from Rolls-Royce, all five vessels will be powered by MTU series 2000 diesel engines.

EPA Tier 4 Propulsion for New San Francisco Ferries

Rolls-Royce said it has won an order to deliver its first EPA Tier 4-compliant propulsion systems from MTU to WETA (Water Emergency Transportation Authority) for installation in three brand-new catamaran ferries. The first of the three high-speed ferries is expected to enter service on the San Francisco Bay in late 2018. The San Francisco Bay is subject to special environmental protection. “Our goal is to operate a ferry service that is sustainable, cost-efficient and eco-friendly,” said Nina Rannells, WETA Executive Director.

New MTU Engines Make Their Debut

At the international maritime exhibition Nor-Shipping in Oslo from May 30 to June 2 2017, MTU, part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, presented its propulsion and systems portfolio, primarily for offshore supply vessels, workboats and ferries. This included Series 2000, 4000 and 8000 propulsion engines in an output range from 400 to 10,000 kW, hybrid propulsion solutions and diesel electric propulsion systems and diesel gensets for the supply of on-board power. Rolls-Royce showcased MTU’s Series 4000 diesel engine meeting IMO III and EPA Tier 4 emission regulations.

Red Funnel Catamaran Powered by MTU Engines

The latest addition to the British Red Funnel ferry fleet, Red Jet 6, completed first sea trials in June 2016 and will go into service in July. The high-speed catamaran ferry was built in Britain by Shemara Refit on the Isle of Wight with Rolls-Royce supplying four MTU Type 10V 2000 M72 engines and ZF Type 3050D gearboxes. Red Jet 6 is the most modern vessel in the Red Funnel fleet. Powered by four 900 kilowatt Series 2000 MTU engines, the catamaran is capable of service speeds up to 38 knots and has twice as many engines as it’s three sister ships which are also powered by MTU.

MTU's New Generation Series 2000 Yacht Engine

MTU will be presenting its propulsion and system solutions at the International yachting “Festival de la Plaisance” in Cannes from September 9-14, 2014. An advanced Series 2000 M96 yacht engine which meets US emission stage EPA Tier 3 (for leisure craft) will be on view for the first time. “The latest generation of Series 2000 engines stands out with optimized acceleration and low fuel consumption. Engines customized for new Dutch search-and-rescue lifeboat vessels keep running after full rotation on axis. In thrashing, unforgiving seas, a capsized rescue vessel used to be a symbol of defeat. To withstand harsh conditions, sea vessels are designed to right themselves when overturned, but even more critical is the ability of the engines powering those vessels to withstand the 360-degree rollover with no compromise to performance. In these situations, the durability and resilience of a marine engine can be the difference between a rescue or a recovery.

MTU Showcases Commercial Vessel Propulsion at Europort

The MTU Series 4000 long-stroke Ironmen engine is available with 8, 12 and 16 cylinders and covers power outputs from 700-2,240kW (940-3,000bhp). It is used in workboats, tugs, inland waterway vessels, ferries, and governmental vessels. The engine is currently being developed for compliance with US emission-stage EPA Tier 3 regulations, with outputs from 560-2,000kW (750-2,680bhp). EPA Tier 3 requirements will be met without the need for exhaust aftertreatment.

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen will be presenting its range of products for commercial marine applications at the Europort Maritime Exhibition in Rotterdam (Hall 1, Stand 1425) from November 5-8. In its role as a systems partner, MTU supplies complete propulsion packages incorporating MTU engines as well as partial systems such as couplings, gearboxes, on-board power gensets and integrated ship automation systems. The company´s portfolio is rounded off by a program of customer-specific service solutions.

MTU Engines First Choice for Emirates Boatbuilder

MTU distributor Al Masaood and Arabian yacht builder Gulf Craft sign preferred partner agreement. Under the agreement, the Arabian shipyard Gulf Craft will soon offer MTU Series 2000 and 4000 engines in its Majesty Yachts as its primary engine option. The agreement was signed by Gulf Craft and Al Masaood, a Tognum Group distributor for MTU engines in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show. The contract will extend through 2014 and provides more than 50 engines ranging from 8, 10, 12 and 16-cylinder units of Series 2000 to 12-cylinder engines of Series 4000. “This preferred partner agreement will allow us to strengthen our long-standing partnership and significantly expand our market share,” said Tognum Chief Sales Officer Dr. Michael Haidinger.

Tognum Makes Large Investments

2012-2014: Investment of more than one billion euros in plant expansion and R&D; Publication of Annual Report 2012 announced. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum intends to invest more than one billion euros by the end of 2014. This amount exceeds the volume that Tognum specified in a cornerstone paper together with Daimler AG and Rolls-Royce plc two years ago. Tognum said it will develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines for compliance with US EPA Tier 3 Recreational and IMO Tier III emissions regulations. The new Series 2000 M96 engines will be able to cover outputs up to 2,600 bhp (1,940 kW), at the same time complying with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 3 regulations using in-engine technology only. Compliance with IMO Tier III will be possible with SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment. Despite the lower exhaust emissions, a reduction in fuel consumption will still be achieved.

Marine Diesel Engine Builder to Manufacture in Poland

The Tognum Group is to erect a new plant in Poland to expand its European production and development capacity. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions is to invest over €90 million in the new site close to the City of Stargard Szczeciński in North-West Poland. The plant is to start producing the first components for Tognum’s MTU brand engines as of 2013. In addition to production, facilities will be set up for the development of mechanical and electronic engine components in Poland. Tognum is also to make investments of a similar magnitude in its lead plant in Friedrichshafen.
