In one a dramatic U.S. shipbuilding and repair move it was announced today that The Carlyle Group (NASDAQ: CG) and private equity firm Stellex Capital Management signed a definitive agreement to acquire and merge Vigor Industrial LLC, an infrastructure, defense, and maritime services company based in Portland, Oregon, and MHI Holdings LLC, a ship repair, maintenance, and other ship husbandry services company based in Norfolk, Virginia.The transaction, subject to customary closing conditions…

New Tank Cleaning Technology

Statoil has found a way to make tank cleaning on supply vessels safer and more effective. M-I SWACO developed a new solution, and was awarded a contract with Statoil that is valued at around $55.7 million. This is the first time that M-I SWACO has commercialized the technology. It is an automatic system, which means that personnel avoid having to enter the tanks to clean them. Wash water and soap are also recycled so that it is only the actual waste washed out of the tank that has to be delivered for further processing.

Statoil has long been looking for a way to make tank cleaning on supply vessels safer and more effective, and at the same time reduce its environmental footprint. Chinese Shipyard Repairs Large Bulker on Time

The MV Handan Steel is an ore carrier belonging to an English company, size: LOA 330m Breadth 60m. The main engine repair involved   the chemical cleaning of the heat exchanger, M/E air cooler x 2sets, main L/O cooler x 1set, and main & auxiliary atmosphere condenser repair. The deck work scope mainly included No.5 cargo hold bulkhead partial steel renewal, E/R main engine ventilation duct to be cropped and renewed, installation of the limit for aft D/E. The coating work included  SA2 sandblasting for the bulkhead of five cargo holds from 16m high downwards with painting of two F/C, totally 14,630 m2, and the hull (16000m2) to be SA2 sandblasted with painting of two T/C, one F/C. The contracting time was 12 days.

NASSCO Wins $6.6m Navy Deal

National Steel and Shipping Co. San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $6,604,248 cost-plus-award-fee modification under a previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C4402) for repairs and alterations during the Non-Docking Scheduled Availability of USS Rushmore (LSD-47). The contractor furnishes the material, supports (electrical, crane, and rigging) and facilities necessary for the maintenance and modernization of LSD/LPD Class ships. This availability includes the chemical cleaning of Distilling Plant Number One, hydraulic modification of the anchor windlass brake, stern gate repairs, testing/repair of the accommodation ladder winch, and deck covering replacement. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and work is expected to be completed by Mar. 2008.
