GSSC Announces Fall Meeting

The Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium (GSSC) announced that its fall meeting will be held October 18-19, at the Holiday Inn in Mobile’s historic district. Highlights of the meeting include a presentation by U.S. Representative Bradley Byrne (R-Fairhope). Byrne will deliver an Update from Washington at the official meeting kick-off at the recently opened GulfQuest Maritime Museum on Oct. 18. Byrne is a member of the prestigious House Rules Committee, Committee on Armed Services, and Committee on Education and the Workforce and is a member of the Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus.

MARAD to Host Meeting on Proposed Delfin LNG License

MARAD Announces Public Scoping Meetings for Proposed Delfin Liquefied Natural Gas Deepwater Port Export Facility. On July 29, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) published a Federal Register Notice of Intent (NOI) advising the public that the agency, in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), will host public scoping meetings regarding the Delfin LNG, LLC deepwater port export license application. The scoping process will assist in identifying and determining the range of environmental issues that the Federal government should consider as it prepares the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the application. The public is invited to participate in the scoping process by attending the public meetings or by submitting written comments to the Federal docket.

Shipping Tribune Conclave Saw Strong Industry Participation

“The Shipping Tribune Conclave 2014” held yesterday at Holiday Inn, Mumbai saw a significantly large participation of stalwarts and operators of the Shipping Industry. Issues which affecting the employment and employability of Indian Seafarers came into focus. Mr. S. Hajara, one of the wll-known names in the shipping industry while delivering the keynote address highlighted the contribution and achievements of Indian seafarers. Capt. Vinay Singh emphasized the need for more quality officers for seniors ranks while also highlighting that the time taken to pass the competency examinations by our officers and engineers at junior level is far more  as compared to officers appearing for examination overseas.

Obituary: Norman N. DeJong, Naval Architect, Innovator

DeJong & Lebet, Inc. announced that Norman N. DeJong passed away on November 7, 2013. Norman was 75 years old at the time of his passing. Norman was one of the founding partners of DeJong & Lebet, Inc., Naval Architects, in 1983 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Blokker, Noord Holland, the Netherlands, immigrating to the US after earning a BS in Naval Architecture at HTS Haarlem in 1959. He worked at Phillip F. Spaulding in Seattle, and NASSCO in San Diego before moving to Jacksonville, FL to work at Gibbs / Aerojet General in 1963.

BOEMRE, USCG to Conduct Seventh Session of Investigation into Deepwater Horizon

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE)/U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Joint Investigation Team, which is examining the Deepwater Horizon explosion and resulting oil spill, today announced that it will hold a seventh session of public hearings the week of April 4, 2011. The hearings, which will focus specifically on the forensic examination of the Deepwater Horizon blowout preventer (BOP), are scheduled to take place at the Holiday Inn Metairie, New Orleans Airport, 2261 North Causeway Blvd., Metairie, La. National Waterways Conference to Hold Budget Summit

5.5 In. ’05, 6.6 In ’06 will be the theme of the National Waterways Conference’s 2004 Budget Summit to be held at the Holiday Inn, Capitol on Tuesday, March 9 and Wednesday, March 10. The title refers to the billions of dollars it will take for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to function at a program funding level that allows projects to go forward, minimizing the current undue project delays and terminations. IF the Army corps of Engineers were to have a full capability funding for all of their projects, NWC estimates the price tag would easily exceed $8 billion. President Bush’s recent FY 2005 Budget request for the Army Corps of Engineers totals $4.215 billion.

Hearing Scheduled on Barge Explosion

At approximately 4:45 p.m. on January 19, 2005 a tank barge that was owned and operated by Egan Marine Corporation exploded and sank in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal just east of the Cicero Avenue Bridge. One crewmember died as a result of the explosion. Salvage operations are currently underway to remove the barge from the canal. At the direction of the Ninth District Commander, the Coast Guard will convene a formal hearing beginning at 10:00 a.m. on April 4, 2005 to determine the cause of this casualty. Maritime Academy to Host Open House

The community is invited to explore the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwestern Michigan College at an Open House on Saturday, October 19, 2002 from 11 am to 2 pm. The Academy is located on East Front Street at Barlow Avenue (next to the Holiday Inn) in Traverse City. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the academy's new 225 ft.training ship State of Michigan.
