Fincantieri Wins US Navy Minesweeper Fleet Maintenance Contract

Fincantieri Marine Systems North America (FMSNA) has been awarded the maintenance contract for the U.S. Navy’s “Avenger”-class minesweepers. The program has a combined value up to more than $78 million.The Navy operates eight “Avenger”-class vessels, which are homeported in Bahrain and Japan. All of the vessels have diesel engines produced by Isotta Fraschini Motori, another Fincantieri’s subsidiary, of which FMSNA technicians are experts. Fairbanks Morse Opens Service Center in Florida

BAE Systems Contracted to Maintain Two US Warships

BAE Systems has been awarded contracts from the U.S. Navy for the repair and maintenance of two ships based in Jacksonville, Fla. The contracts come within days of one another and have a combined value of $61.7 million and a cumulative value of $68.6 million if all options are exercised. BAE Systems received a $32.5 million contract from the Navy on May 10 for the docking selected restricted availability of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99). The company will drydock the 509.5-foot-long destroyer this summer and will perform structural and tank repairs…

Navy Carrier Potential Move Controversial

The Virginian-Pilot reported that the Navy’s preference to base a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier at Mayport Naval Station reignited the political rivalry between Florida and Virginia for Navy ships, sailors and the economic activity associated with them. The move would cost $426 million and could divert 3,200 sailors and civilian personnel from Virginia to Florida and take at least six years to prepare for. A final decision by Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter is expected by the end the year. Virginia officials immediately criticized the decision as costly, inefficient and politically motivated. USS Samuel B. Roberts Makes Port Call to Martinique

Sailors from USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) "Sammy B" and embarked helicopter detachment, Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 48, arrived in the Port de France Martinique on April 3, for the first port visit of the ship’s Partnership of the Americas (POA) 2007 deployment to South America. Arriving with the Samuel B. Roberts will be the Chilean Navy Frigate Almirante Latorre (FFG 14). Latorre will be working side by side with the “Sammy B” throughout this deployment. In addition to donating a variety of supplies provided through Project Handclasp, many Sailors will have the opportunity to interact with local communities through community relations projects such as minor repairs to schools, hospitals and orphanages.

Navy Awards Contract to IMIA

The U.S. Navy has awarded a $42.04 million contract to International Marine & Industrial Applicators LLC in Irvington for the painting and preservation of SSBN and SSGN class submarines. The contract was awarded by the Navy's South East Regional Maintenance Command, Mayport Naval Station, Jacksonville, Fla. Work will be performed in Kings Bay, Ga.

NORSHIPCO Wins $10M Contract

NORSHIPCO, a subsidiary of United Defense Industries, Inc., has been awarded a $10 million contract by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair, Jacksonville, for two fixed-price repair packages on the U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier, USS KENNEDY (CV-66). Work is scheduled to begin in January 2003 and be completed by late summer 2003 at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, the ship's homeport. NORSHIPCO has teamed with North Florida Shipyards, Inc. (NFSY), located in Jacksonville, Fla., to perform this work. According to Tom Epley, NORSHIPCO's president, "We are pleased to be teaming with the management and workers at North Florida Shipyards. This teaming arrangement with NFSY represents entry into another major Navy market by NORSHIPCO.
