Maritime Cyber Alert

For some years now, the maritime sector has experienced breaches of various computer and information technology (IT) systems. Primarily, these breaches have been collateral damage. The maritime sector has almost never been the intended target. That does not mean that the damage has been minor. In June 2017, A.P. Moller-Maersk suffered a major cyber-attack. The malware had been designed by Russian hackers to disrupt the Ukrainian power sector. Once released, though, it proved to be indiscriminate, infecting IT systems worldwide that had not been kept up to date. In the case of A.P.

In a world that brings pretty much anything to you at the press of an app, we are often asked why it is so difficult to assess comfort onboard a yacht. That the assessment of comfort onboard is not an easy task is also shown by the fact that there is no industry standard as yet. This problem has already been identified by the International Organization for Standardization and a new working group (ISO (TC8/SC12/WG 5 AWI 22834) led by MARIN is aiming to develop a comfort standard for yachts in the next three years.ISO Comfort standardOn a parallel track…

Catfines: Uncertainty Must Be Addressed

Graph from FOBAS (Image: Aderco)

Earlier this year the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published a revised edition of its ISO 8217 specifications for marine fuels, which still maintains a 60 mg/kg limit for catfines (catalytic fines). It’s not rare to hear comments about this threshold being on the high side. A recent test conducted by the Fuel Oil Bunkering Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS) takes the debate to a new level. It shows that a number of bunker samples delivered in Fujeirah…

EALs Rise Up on Deck

The next critical area of consideration for the use of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants is on deck. What’s leaking into the water from your cranes and winches? Vessel fleets face an increasing number of environmentally-focused regulations, adding complexity to their operations and creating urgency around compliance. These regulatory requirements, however, do not offset an operator’s need for products that perform consistently well. With the right Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs)…
