USMMA Names Academic Dean and Provost

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point (USMMA) announced today that John R. Ballard, Ph.D., has been named the new Academic Dean and Provost at the federal service academy. In this position, Dr. Ballard will serve as the chief academic officer and principal advisor to the Superintendent in all matters relating to the academic program and faculty. He will also co-chair the educational priority working group for the recently released USMMA strategic plan.Dr. Ballard served as a Marine Infantry officer immediately following graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Austal Christens USNS Brunswick

Austal celebrated the christening of USNS Brunswick (JHSV 6) with a ceremony this morning at its shipyard in Mobile, Ala. USNS Brunswick is the sixth of 10 Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) that Austal has under contract with the U.S. Navy as part of an overall 10-ship block-buy contract worth over $1.6 billion. JHSV 6, a 338-foot shallow draft aluminum catamaran, is a multi-mission, non-combatant transport vessel characterized by its high volume, high speed, and flexibility. It is the fourth ship to be named Brunswick after the seaport city located on the southeast coast of Georgia. The city of Brunswick played an important role during World War II as the site of a 435-acre shipyard that employed up to 16,000 workers at its peak. The yard produced 99 Liberty ships by the end of the war.

Godfrey Joins Life Cycle Engineering

Life Cycle Engineering, Inc. (LCE) has announced that Edward S. Godfrey has joined Life Cycle Engineering as vice president of business development. Godfrey will be responsible for partnering with Department of Defense (DoD) customers and other government organizations to establish engineering and technical solutions that support the warfighter and DoD mission. Godfrey has over 36 years of civilian service leading large, diversified engineering and corporate operations organizations within the Department of the Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).

PSNS & IMF Receives Commendation

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) was presented the Navy’s Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) on Friday, Nov. 7, by Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), on behalf of the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), for superior performance providing shipboard damage recovery to USS George Washington (CVN 73). George Washington was damaged from a May 22 fire in an unmanned Auxiliary Boiler Exhaust and Supply space, resulting in extensive damage to the U.S. Navy’s first forward-deployed nuclear powered carrier. NAVSEA’s PSNS & IMF was assigned as Lead Maintenance Authority (LMA) with responsibility of coordinating all maintenance activities assigned to the recovery effort — including ship’s force…

Jebsen Appointed as Director For Ship Signatures at Navy Laboratory

Gary M. Jebsen has been elevated to the Senior Executive Service (SES) and the position of Director for Ship Signatures in the Naval Surface Warfare Center's Carderock Division (NSWCCD). In this role, the Leesburg, Virginia resident serves as both directorate head and leader of the Signatures Group in the Naval Seal Systems Command (NAVSEA). Gary shoulders the responsibility for naval and federal ship design and research, development, test and evaluation, and overall program management in the area of ship signature performance. He is leaving a successful assignment as Submarine Technology Program Manager at the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Navy Lab Engineers Honored

Dr. Stuart D. Jessup has been named Senior Research Scientist in Hydromechanics for the United States Navy. Dr. Jessup, a mechanical engineer, works at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) Hydromechanics Directorate in Bethesda. Jessup's contributions to the science and naval engineering of marine propellers has earned Navy and international recognition. Most recently, he received the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award. He has lead the development of new propeller blade design methods that replace the use of standardized blade sections with custom designed section shapes tailored to each specific application. Recently, he developed technology for suppressing tip vortex cavitation inception by unique shaping of the propeller blade tip geometry.
