The family of Crandall Dry Dock’s late owner P. Brian Duffy is seeking a buyer for the Bourne, Mass. shipyard engineering and services firm.Originally founded in Boston in 1854, Crandall Dry Dock was acquired by Duffy, a former employee, in 1994. Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) christened pre-commissioning unit New Jersey (SSN 796) at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division.“The christening is a Navy and shipbuilder tradition that celebrates the hard work and dedication of the women and men who are building this magnificent submarine, readying her for the next phase of construction, which includes launch, testing, sea trials and delivery to the Navy,” said Jennifer Boykin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding.

In the United States, it is a frustrating time to be in the government shipbuilding business. Even though America depends upon maritime commerce and faces growing security risks at sea, shipbuilding is just not a major national focus.Up to now, shipbuilders have had it pretty good. For the past several years, big naval shipbuilders have enjoyed steady growth and strong performance. In 2020, Huntington Ingalls Industries enjoyed record revenue of $9.4 billion, an 8.5% margin and gave a quarter billion back to shareholders in dividends and stock buybacks.

The search for a crewmember who reportedly went overboard from the Carnival Victory cruise ship about 30 miles northwest of Cuba was called off on Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Officials were unable to locate the missing crewmember after scouring approximately 2,600 square nautical miles over the course of over 45 hours.Involved with the search were the Coast Guard Cutters Charles Sexton (WPC-1108) and William Trump (WPC-1111) with Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane aircrews.

Adm. Philip S. Shelf Drilling, the world's largest owner of shallow water rigs, expects to see higher rig rates in 2019 and more consolidation of the fragmented market, Chief Executive David Mullen told Reuters.   Following an initial public offering, the Dubai-based company's shares began trading in Oslo on Monday, four years after abandoning plans to list in London in the wake of an oil price downturn.   Its shares traded at 64.80 Norwegian crowns ($7.98) per share by 1023 GMT, below its initial offer of 65.35 crowns. HMAS Huon capped off a South West Pacific deployment recently with the final of six port visits to Hobart, Tasmania, and her nearby namesake city of Huonville. Having already toured the remote Australian territories of Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands, as well as Luganville and Port Vila, Vanuatu, and as far east as Nelson, New Zealand, Huon finally made her way to the southern capital for a four-day visit. Whilst in Hobart, Huon hosted an official reception with dignitaries from the two cities, including a ceremonial sunset with a volley of blank cartridges to wow the guests on the wharf. Commanding Officer, HMAS Huon, Lieutenant Commander Jason Mullen said the occasion couldn’t be more fitting for his last visit as Commanding Officer.

The “Old Salt” designation, honoring the Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) serving on active duty with the earliest Surface Warfare Qualification, passed from Adm. Sam Locklear to Vice Adm. Kurt Tidd at a June 22, 2015 ceremony at Washington, DC. Locklear, the recent Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, retired on June 30, 2015. Tidd is currently the Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff. Locklear has been the “Old Salt” since May 2014. “In the Navy, we have an expression for a respected, experienced and knowledgeable mariner. We call them ‘Old Salts,’” said Vice Adm.

Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings) plc updates shareholders with respect to its FEL 2/13 and FEL 3/13 licenses in the South Porcupine Basin, offshore Ireland. Europa has now received a new prospect inventory from the operator of the licenses, Kosmos Energy Ltd. The inventory is based on state of the art 3D seismic acquired in 2013 and includes the identification of a number of new, large prospects and leads on both licenses. As a result, material changes have been made to the prospectivity previously mapped on the licenses using historic 2D seismic data. Europa is currently preparing relevant data to initiate work on a Competent Persons Report for completion in H1 2015. • These new prospects and leads replace the Kiernan prospect previously identified by Europa.

Domestic container volume continued its steady performance in the second quarter of 2013 with 9 percent year-over-year gains, largely attributable to a strong big box segment, with total intermodal traffic rising by 2.4 percent for the quarter, reports industry trade association IANA. International volume was unable to build on its solid Q1 growth, falling 1.3 percent in Q2 after posting 3 percent gains in Q1. This decline can be attributed to surprisingly weak shipments in June, with loads falling 6 percent from a year ago.

Transocean Ltd. to sell 38 shallow water drilling rigs to Shelf Drilling International Holdings, Ltd. for approximately US$1.05-billion. Shelf Drilling is a newly formed company sponsored equally by Castle Harlan, Inc., CHAMP Private Equity and Lime Rock Partners. "This agreement marks an important milestone in our asset strategy to increase our focus on high-specification floaters and jackups, improving our long-term competitiveness," said Steven L. Newman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Transocean Ltd. The sales price includes approximately $855 million in cash, subject to working capital and other closing adjustments, and $195 million in seller financing. Seller financing will be in the form of preference shares issued by an affiliate of Shelf Drilling.

Christine N. Piersall was appointed to this position by the City of Portsmouth Circuit Court Judges and replaces Bruce Cherry, who has been on the Board for more than 33 years. This nine-member board examines and licenses the pilots responsible for the safe passage of ships in Virginia's major shipping lanes and waterways. While many difficult budget and policy decisions are ahead of us, I believe the $533.8 billion requested for defense is a reasonable level which will allow us to support our troops and keep America safe. “I commend the administration for making service members and their families a priority in this budget. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has approved Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Calif., as the commissioning location of Pre-commissioning Unit (PCU) Dewey, the Navy's newest and most technologically advanced guided-missile destroyer. The event will be the first time a U.S. Navy warship has been commissioned at Seal Beach. Deborah Mullen, wife of Adm. Mike G. Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is the ship's sponsor. She had previously christened the ship during a ceremony at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss., Jan. 26, 2008. The new destroyer honors Adm.
